The Bryce Gibbs Versus Joel Selwood Watch: Round 12
Round 11 goes to Bryce Gibbs.
B Gibbs
Kicks: 6
Handballs: 2
Marks: 2
Tackles: 3
Goals: 0
J Selwood (Mathew Stoke's Round 11 stats)
Kicks: 6
Handballs: 10
Marks: 6
Tackles: 2
Goals: 1
Selwood has taken a couple of weeks off, which has allowed Gibbs to get close at the halfway point in their unofficial competition to decide the best midfielder, and probably best overall player too, from the 2006 AFL draft. Joel Selwood was a star last week in the VFL and Gibbs continued his solid play in the Carlton back line in the AFL.
While Gibbs did not have a lot of the ball, he did save a couple of goals due to his positioning down back and he also showed that he isn't as susceptible to marking players as possibly thought. He did play a bit on Ebert and also was opposed to Gray for a time.
Stokes' game was observed with J Selwood only an emergency for Geelong's game at Adelaide. Stokes is quicker than Selwood but not usually as prolific, but he had a Selwood-like 10 handballs in this close game. As goals were hard to come by for both teams he made a solid contribution around the forward line for the Cats with his pace and hustle and he also helped on the scoreboard with a goal.
A spot has opened up in the Geelong side for their game against the Lions, Rooke must think that he is lucky to only be out for one round. Selwood will be competing with Josh Hunt and several other Cats who are trying to get back into their AFL side. Gibbs will be in action on Friday as Carlton play Hawthorn. Thankfully for him, as the Hawks don't have a lot of smaller players deep in their forward line it could allow Gibbs to play more in the middle. Unless Pagan thinks that Gibbs could play on Franklin, Roughead or Boyle, but that won't happen. Gibbs against someone like Young or McGlynn might be the way that Carlton go.
