Past Versus Future In The VFL

The VFL game from Geelong yesterday started with Tom Hawkins versus Chris Grant. Two big names of the sport but they didn’t have a big impact on the result. Fans of the Bulldogs and Cats would have enjoyed seeing Grant in action, and they would have also been delighted to know that their future playing stocks will be very talented when Everitt, Lynch, Hill, Hawkins, Selwood, Djerrkura and Prismall cement spots in their AFL sides.

From The Age: Werribee blast stuns Geelong

AFL Fantasy Impact:

The Youngsters

Everitt: He played on marking targets and also on Hogan, one of Geelong’s fastest players. Everitt’s versatility should make him a good player for the Bulldogs and also for fantasy teams. That might be next year unless an injury or two opens a spot for him in the Bulldogs’ back line.

Lynch: He was very impressive last week and was solid in this game. He just needs to practice his kicking for goal, although if he gets a chance with the Bulldogs it will probably be as an outside midfielder. This won’t get fantasy points, but Lynch will be a future contender the Mark of the Year award, he can jump.

Hill: He ran around and pressured the Geelong players in the middle, his athleticism was on display and next year he could be ready for the AFL.

Selwood: He will have to go from the VFL to the AFL for a rest. He had plenty of the ball and received a lot of free kicks. He was often opposed to Robert Castello, a player who can run a long way. The future of Geelong was on display when Selwood received a free kick in the middle and hit Hawkins on the lead with an accurate pass. Fantasy coaches have a dilemma with Selwood, if he was playing every game in the AFL and getting a solid amount of playing time he would be worth starting, but as he is spending time in the VFL and the Cats don’t have any injuries to their midfielders it might be time to be happy with his fantasy price increase and trade him in.

Hawkins: He provided a few marks and his leads were quick but he didn’t have a big game. Some of that has to do with the supply to the forward line as well as Werribee controlling the game. He will be back in the AFL for a few more games but he won’t have a big year for fantasy points, unless injuries hit Geelong.

Prismall: After their AFL midfielders, and also Selwood and maybe Brynes too, comes Prismall so even though he was good for stats in some early games he is unlikely to help fantasy teams this season.

Djerrkura: Often played as a forward in the VFL, he might be a player who helps AFL fantasy teams next year.

The Oldsters

Grant: He will need at least another week. Grant was slowly brought back with plenty of rests on the bench. He is too expensive in fantasy leagues to take a risk with when he does play again for the Bulldogs.

Minson: Not as dominant as he was the previous week, Minson might be back with the Bulldogs if Darcy or Street are injured.

McMahon: There were times when he did not stand out, with his play, but injuries to the Bulldogs up in Brisbane should mean he gets back into the team. He was solid and made good decisions in the back half and kicked efficiently. Wearing his bright blue Bulldogs boots was not a good look considering Werribee’s colours. It might be worth signing him for fantasy teams next week, assuming he does replace Griffen.

Robbins: Nothing wrong with kicking 4 goals, but he is more of a backup player for the Bulldogs in case Johnson is out. Robbins is unlikely to help fantasy teams this season.

McDougall: He can mark the ball, so if the Bulldogs give him another go he might help fantasy teams with contested marks.

Gardiner: Someone who lives in the phantom zone between leagues, too good for the VFL and not able to secure a regular spot in his AFL team. He won’t be useful for AFL fantasy teams.

Byrnes: Byrnes was hot for a lot of the game, but he is behind Varcoe and Stokes on the Geelong depth chart for little, quick forwards. If injuries open up a spot with their AFL side, his fantasy price is very reasonable and he could help fantasy teams.
