Melbourne Clubs To Go Lion Hunting

The Melbourne-based AFL clubs could have a big offseason battle amongst themselves to land Brisbane's Jamie Charman. Richmond have already been talked about, and they would be a chance to grab him in the preseason draft, and other teams will be interested in trading for him if he does intend to leave the Lions.

From The Courier-Mail: Charman considers move

Sources close to the club say there is growing evidence Charman would be open to a move.
One possible scenario is that Brisbane will offer Charman as a trade to St Kilda for forward Nick Riewoldt.

Riewoldt has yet to agree to terms with the Saints and there remains a lot of talk that Brisbane is having a crack at luring him home for next year.

Carlton
Their ruck spot is a mess, so maybe Charman is a solution. Setanta O'hAilpin could become the league's best full back, so the ruck should not be a priority for him. Carlton could look to Essendon, it seemed that every year in Fletcher's early career Sheedy would talk about changing him into a ruckman, they kept him at full back and it worked and O'hAilpin might be in a similar situation. McLaren, a former Lion, isn't the answer and Ackland and Cloke are also undersized. Hampson might have been played in the VFL reserves a couple of times this season, which might mean he isn't as close to AFL as expected, and he also seems to play a lot more as a forward there than in the ruck. Charman would have to be a player that Carlton look at.

Collingwood
Fraser can be a great forward, and a tandem of him and Charman would make Collingwood a much better team. Fraser does have Richards and Bryan as his support now, and while Richards is solid for hitouts and Bryan can kick goals, Charman would be a more complete player. The Magpies would probably be planning to use at least one of their upcoming draft picks on a ruck prospect, and it would make a lot of sense to trade a pick or two to acquire a ruckman like Charman as he still has plenty of years left and, unlike a young ruck prospect, Charman will help them on the field right away.

Essendon
The Bombers always like to load up on height, but they may not have room for Charman. Negotiations with Brisbane may not be easy too. Hille has Laycock as his backup, Ryder looks to have found his perfect spot in the back line but he will have some minutes in the ruck and there is also Gumbleton as another option in the future. Laycock has been useful as a tall forward and Gumbleton is more of a key position player so Sheedy might look at Charman if the price is right. Maybe something involving Bradley for Charman would work for Brisbane and Essendon, if the Bombers do pursue Charman.

Geelong
They are probably a rare team that is going to be a seller, when it comes to ruckmen in the offseason. King might join Charman as one of the big players up for grabs in the offseason. The Cats had a ruckman join Brisbane a long time ago, and maybe it happens again if the Lions want a veteran to replace Charman.

Hawthorn
They are building with youth, and as they have had success with Campbell and Taylor, and also have Bailey to come back, Charman may not fit here. Renouf is also a ruck prospect for Hawthorn, although if Renouf wanted to return to Queensland then maybe the teams would start talking about a trade.

Kangaroos
No room for Charman here, as they have McIntosh, Hale, Moran and Goldstein. While Petrie can play at both ends of the ground, he is also an extra ruckman for them as well. Hale's career with the Kangaroos has been a bit of a rollercoaster, so if he sees a move to the Lions as something that will benefit him then maybe a Charman for Hale move works, or the Kangaroos could be part of a three-team trade that makes Hale a Lion, with Charman joining another Melbourne-based club and the Kangaroos receiving other players or picks.

Melbourne
If the Demons decide to make a push to win next year, then Charman makes a lot of sense. He would provide help for not only White but also Neitz. While Paul Johnson has been useful in that role this year, there should be room for him and Charman. The Lions might ask for Petterd, and even though it is often best to take a big instead of a small, Petterd might be too good a prospect for Melbourne to send him back to Queensland so soon. The Demons have a few key position players who have not cemented a regular spot, maybe Miller or Dunn could see a chance for success helping Jonathan Brown in the Lions' forward line.

Richmond
The Tigers have already mentioned Charman, and their ruck depth has been a trouble spot this season. A healthy combo of Simmonds and Pattison in the second half of the season could show that Charman isn't really needed. If Richmond do finish last they get the top pick in the preseason draft, and they will be dealing from a position of strength in negotiations with Brisbane. If Charman wants to move to Richmond, he can go in the preseason draft and Brisbane would receive nothing.

St Kilda
While the article does mention Riewoldt, the Saints also have Gilbert to offer. Charman would be a good fit with the Saints. Clarke is very old, Gardiner seems to be injured very often while Brooks and Rix are more of a backup type of player. Koschitzke and Charman could rotate through the ruck and the third tall forward spot.

Western Bulldogs
The Bulldogs always need more height, but the ruck spot could be in good hands with Street and Minson there. It might depend on the price for Charman, as something involving Sam Power might be acceptable to the Bulldogs. Akermanis' input might also be valued by the Bulldogs, and he didn't steer them wrong when they added Pask to their rookie list.
