It's The Spinal Countdown - Number 9

Hawthorn

Full Back - Stephen Gilham
Centre Half Back - Trent Croad
Centre - Sam Mitchell
Centre Half Forward - Lance Franklin
Full Forward - Jarryd Roughead

In a year or two they could be at number 1. Thorp, Boyle or Dowler may also be part of the structure along the spine. The back half is where there is some concern. Croad and Gilham usually do enough for the Hawks to get the win, but Hawthorn may try to bring in another full back, which would allow Gilham to play as the third tall defender. With Boyle and Williams also playing up forward, Thorp might be someone to try at full back, the Hawks also have the taller Renouf and Dawson too.

1997
Full Back - Chris Langford
Centre Half Back - Mark Graham
Centre - Daniel Harford
Centre Half Forward - Nick Holland
Full Forward - Jason Dunstall

I really think you have made two mistakes. First, Willo should be the Full forward not Roughy. Secondly, by fixing the first mistake you shuddenly have a FF that is averageing 3 goals a game over the last 3 seasons, a CHF that had the most shots on goal in the comp (think he was 3rd leading scorer), arguably the best in an under play in the comp (at least for clearences if nothing else), a proven All Australian CHB and I will give you just a handy FB.

If that isn't in the top ten, man I am scared to see the best in the league!

Hawthorn are not the easiest team to find their spine, especially up forward with their "box" setup of 4 players. Boyle was often at full forward last year, and they are also trying to find a spot for Thorp. Williams might be considered their full forward, but that could change in 2008 if he takes on a complimentary role like Dixon had and they put a bigger player at full forward.

Croad and Gilham were solid for Hawthorn, but they need to find one more tall defender and they have a few on their list to consider.

The post did say they had the potential to be ranked at number 1 in the near future, and if some players maintain their production and others keep improving they will be one of the top spines.
