It Is Time For Hampson At Carlton
The ClokeLand ruck duo has an average height of 196cm. Both Cloke and Ackland, and Dylan McLaren too, measure in at that mark, above average in height compared to most of the community but very short when measured against AFL ruckmen. Shaun Hampson is 201cm tall, if Pagan is really developing the future he needs to get games into Hampson now. Essendon could be rolling out two big ruckmen against Carlton, so maybe Carlton need Hampson right now too.
Hampson was taken at pick 17, which was a bit of a surprise. The players taken right before and right after Hampson in the draft, Mitch Brown and Leroy Jetta, have already played this season.
There was a big game many years ago between Carlton and Essendon. Carlton made an unexpected move to play Mark Porter in his first ever AFL game in front of a big crowd at the MCG. Porter would have around twice as many hitouts as the Essendon team and Carlton won the game. Hampson doesn't have the experience that Porter had then, as Porter had played in the VFL before joining Carlton, but Hampson does have the benefit of playing in the Under 18 Championships as well as games in Queensland.
Cameron Cloke has been playing better than Ackland, so if they do make a choice it should be Ackland who is wearing the red of the Bullants. They can use Cloke to start the quarters, and he can push back and fill a hole in front of Lucas and Lloyd. Hampson could then take on a tired Hille at the end of quarters or young Laycock. Hampson might be able to run off both players.
