Australian Football Sesquicentennial - Three Games, Value For Money Round.
People used to spend a day at the football, watching three games with the under 19s, reserves and seniors. It might be a good break from everyone turning up five minutes before the bounce if during 2008 there was a round that provided a complete day of entertainment for the supporters.
The AFL would need to work with the VFL, SANFL, WAFL and their reserves competitions and also the TAC Cup but it could be done. The Lions and Swans might need to play away games that round as their local competitions are not up to the level of the other states.
Fremantle could have a home game in WA, with the two curtain raisers on Subiaco being contested by the South Fremantle and East Fremantle sides. Port Adelaide could be the South Australian team with a home game for that round, and Port Adelaide of the SANFL could be involved in the two earlier games.
A Box Hill versus Tasmania VFL game could be played before a Hawthorn AFL game at Launceston. A game at Kardinia Park would make sense, Geelong have their own VFL team which does occasionally play before AFL games and the Geelong Falcons of the TAC Cup could play the first game of the day.
While there may be some extra costs associated with this idea, there could also be extra revenue from some areas. When fans turn up to the ground in the morning the food at the stadium doesn't seem that overpriced when lunchtime comes around. More people might want to attend these games too, as they get three games for the price of one. The nostalgia factor could also appeal to some fans who miss seeing the extra games. The venues could also be easier to get to, as the arrival of the supporters will be spread out over a greater time so there won't be as much of a crush getting into the car-park and also on public transport.
The ideal time for this special week would be in the final month of the season, draft prospects in the TAC Cup, WAFL or SANFL could get a bit more publicity. They could also have the added education of playing on the big stage.
Supporters used to enjoy a whole day at the football, maybe for one round next year when the 150th birthday of Australian football is celebrated they could do it again.
