Australian Football Sesquicentennial - Mud Round

This was going to be part of the paper round idea, as games from last century often had a muddy goal square covered in streamers and other bits of paper. But football in the mud deserves its own mention as a possibility to recreate the football of the past as the AFL celebrates 150 years of Australian football in 2008.

It might be late July or early August and a few grounds are getting worn out. While they can rotate the goal posts and replace the grass, maybe they could go back a few decades for just one round next season and take fans back to what went on at places like Moorabbin or Footscray.

Sometimes there is too much "delicate genius" football being played under the roof, getting back to basics and into the mud would show who can really play. If there is one thing that football games in the mud really show, it is who is going hardest for the football. The guy covered in the most mud is often the best-on-ground, while the one who leaves the ground with a bright, clean uniform often is in the reserves the next week.

There is still plenty of mud in the VFL and local leagues but it would be fun if some of the AFL grounds were a bit muddy for a round next year. It won't happen officially, but maybe Kardinia Park or the MCG will provide some mud if the weather is right.

Next week's Australian Football Sesquicentennial Celebrations Suggestion: Coaches on the bench, fans on the ground.
