AFL Player Of The Week: Round 12 Part 2
Matthew Richardson of the Richmond Tigers.
Richardson needs to get his marks in a game record back from Nathan Bassett, and he wasn't that far away when he led the Tigers to their first win of the season. Richardson's 16 marks had a big influence on the result, as did many of his other contributions.
While Richardson produced a unique result on the scoreboard, the fact that he had the ball so often in Richmond's forward area was a key part to their win. As the Demons looked at different ways to contain him, which didn't work, it also opened up space for Pettifer, Brown, Tivendale and Hyde to make an impact up forward.
Richardson did kick 3 goals and 3 of his kicks went through for behinds, he went close with 3 other kicks which hit the goal post. 3 goals, 6 behinds wasn't the epitome of accuracy but it was entertaining.
As usual, Richardson and the umpire's whistle had a big impact on the game. It wasn't all bad for Richardson this time, he did give away 5 free kicks but also received 4 of his own.
The Tigers are not doing too well this season, and they needed a big effort from their star forward to produce their first win of season 2007. Richardson had 21 kicks and 16 marks and Richmond got the win, and Richardson is a deserving AFL Player Of The Week.
