Smith, who missed the entire 2006 season after an ankle reconstruction, hurt the same right ankle in December and has barely trained with team-mates on the track since.
"We're still hopeful that he'll be right for round one because he had a good build up before Christmas, but we've got to wait on his progress over the next few weeks," McDonald said.
