AFL Insider - by Craig Hill

Yahoo NFL Fantasy Teams

July 31st 2008 02:43
Here are the Yahoo fantasy NFL teams that were recently drafted.

Probably try to get your fantasy team to look more like the top one, it looks much better with the big names like Brady, Owens, Bush and Gates.

Some tips, when drafting bench players try to get those who don’t have the same bye week as the starter in the same position. A good defensive team to pick is often one that also has a good offense, New England and Minnesota were selected because they can control the ball with their offense, leaving less time of possession to be scored against. Fantasy NFL tight ends are like AFL fantasy ruckmen, there seem to be very few good ones, so draft a highly-ranked tight end like Gates.

Drafting 8th overall.

QB Tom Brady (NE - QB)
WR Terrell Owens (Dal - WR)
WR Kevin Curtis (Phi - WR)
WR Jerricho Cotchery (NYJ - WR)
RB Reggie Bush (NO - RB)
RB LenDale White (Ten - RB)
TE Antonio Gates (SD - TE)

K Stephen Gostkowski (NE - K)

DEF New England (NE - DEF)

BN Joey Galloway (TB - WR)
BN Selvin Young (Den - RB)
BN Deuce McAllister (NO - RB)

WR Wes Welker (NE - WR)
WR Roddy White (Atl - WR)
WR Jerricho Cotchery (NYJ - WR)
RB Larry Johnson (KC - RB)
RB Maurice Jones-Drew (Jac - RB)

The Bombers lost a lot of experience, from their playing group and also their coach, and that means there are opportunities for some of the younger Bombers to step up in season 2008. Expect Monfries to fire in a new role with increased minutes in the midfield.

From The Age: Monfries stakes his claim for a midfield role

"It's learning off some of the better players about how they go about playing through the midfield," Monfries said yesterday. "What I'm trying to do this year is step up into that midfield role and get out of half-forward, and by playing on some of the better guys there you just learn where they run and how they get ball.

Like a legion of younger Essendon players upon whom more responsibility will be thrust in 2008, Monfries is relishing a new coaching regime, and a markedly different pre-season to previous years.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Essendon have several players who could now move into the middle, and score much higher in fantasy points. Monfries is as good as any of the other younger Bombers to take a chance on for fantasy teams. Even if he doesn't have a huge year he can bring in fantasy points with a few goals if he is played forward, but if he does have a huge year he will help fantasy teams as he grabs some of the possessions that are available with Hird and others gone.

The Dockers may be a chance to win the preseason competition, even with Hasleby out of the lineup. Pavlich is their main man, and he might have some assistance from Chris Mayne.

From the Fremantle site: Changes planned for Adelaide clash

Fremantle will make at least five changes to the line up that accounted for West Coast on Sunday for their round two NAB Cup clash against Adelaide this Sunday.

Chris Mayne will come into the side after sitting out of Fremantle’s 44 point win over the Eagles and is a strong chance to feature in the club’s rotating midfield. Sixteen players had roles in the centre for Fremantle at the weekend and it is something Mark will experiment with more over the pre-season to see which players will be able to offer solid contributions when moved to the midfield.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Mayne played a great game for the Dockers when they were in South Africa. That was as a medium forward, which isn't something that will be available to him during the regular season with Headland, Solomon, Murphy and Campbell among the options to play next to Pavlich, Tarrant and Farmer. But maybe Mayne could rotate through the forward line, midfield and bench, swapping around with someone like Headland. While that may not provide a lot of minutes and stats for Mayne, if he does get into the Dockers lineup he will only have to do a little to have a useful fantasy price rise.

The Bulldogs are one of several teams that had players injured during the weekend games. Although Farren Ray's injury is not as serious as those of Malceski and Hasleby. But it does seem that Ray won't be ready when the Bulldogs play in round 1.

From the Herald Sun: Injury curse strikes early

Western Bulldog Farren Ray is the latest injury casualty. In a big blow, the midfielder is set to miss the start of the home-and-away season.

Ray will miss four to six weeks after suffering a cracked fibula in the club's 11-point NAB Cup win against the Kangaroos on Friday night.

From the Western Bulldogs site: Softly softly approach for cautious Dogs

"[Lindsay] Gilbee, [Jarrod] Harbrow and [Farren] Ray won't play, and Ryan Griffen won't play either, because he's got some family involvement in Adelaide," Eade said on Tuesday.

"We'll probably be down to the bare numbers, to be honest. Hopefully Shaun Higgins will be right, Andrew McDougall we're hoping will come back, but he may not get up.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

It probably doesn't change a lot there, but maybe it makes Griffen, Higgins or Giansiracusa a slightly better signing. West and Cross will still do a lot of the work in the middle, with Boyd and Cooney also capable of a lot of possessions.

While the Bulldogs did defeat the Kangaroos last weekend, they did not find a big forward to help out Johnson, Murphy and Welsh. There was talk that Minson could play against Essendon. Neither Minson or McDougall are expensive in fantasy leagues, but one of them would have to have a big NAB Cup game before being considered for a fantasy team.

Whitnall and Mr Kennedy are gone, and now Brad Fisher will miss a few games with a hand injury. Fevola has the whole forward line to himself, something that he won’t mind.

From the Carlton site: Fisher’s bad break

The 70-gamer, now in his sixth season at senior level, underwent surgery on Monday afternoon to have a pin inserted in his thumb.

Fisher is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

From The Age: Fisher out for 8 weeks

"We have four weeks, nearly five, before the first round, so he could miss three to four weeks of the season," Icke said. "… Putting the pin in should help the recovery but I think it would be safe to assume he will miss round one.

Having lost Josh Kennedy through the Judd trade and with a preference for Jarrad Waite to hold down centre half-back, the club had developed a hole at centre half-forward it was hoping Fisher could fill. "We have a few options for players we will look at," Icke said. "Richard Hadley is waiting to come back (from injury) and he could play that role. He has played similar roles for Brisbane and he is some chance to play this weekend."

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Brad Fisher was not going to be their real centre half forward, but in terms of fantasy footy stats and also helping Carlton as an option behind Fevola he is just as important. The idea at Carlton seemed to be that they would just place a big body at centre half forward, like Hartlett or Hampson, with Fevola their primary forward and Fisher next in line.

With Fisher out, they could replace him with someone like Grigg, Wiggins or Edwards. All those three have similar characteristics to Fisher, with covering plenty of ground and being a good mark of the football.

Maybe, for a few games at least, their centre half forward does get a lot more of the ball directed to them. Hartlett and Hampson are inexpensive in fantasy leagues and worth looking at. C Cloke and S O’hAilpin are other options Carlton have for centre half forward, but they are not cheap in fantasy leagues. Cain Ackland is between those two above groups on fantasy price.

Fevola was going to have plenty of the ball directed towards him even if Fisher was there, so for the opening rounds it would seem that Fevola would be expected to have more stats than he usually does.

The Dockers played very well in their NAB Cup game against the West Coast Eagles, and looked like a team headed back to the top 8 after a disappointing 2007, but Fremantle now have to deal with a long-term injury to one of their best players, Paul Hasleby.

From The West Australian: NAB Cup knee injury ends Hasleby’s season

Hasleby’s left knee buckled under pressure from Adam Selwood and Matt Spangher in the third quarter of Sunday’s 44-point victory, leaving Hasleby in agony.

“The left knee injury sustained in last night’s game against West Coast will now require a full knee reconstruction,” the club statement said.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

He was one of their main players in the middle, getting the ball out of the congestion and delivering it to his teammates. There are now a lot of possessions available for someone else. It could be an old player who takes on more centre square minutes, like Bell or McManus, or a younger player like Peake or Schammer. They can also put into the centre some former Bombers with Solomon, Mark Johnson and Bradley all Dockers now. It might get a bit confusing there, as their other “M Johnson” could also be moved into the middle, Michael Johnson. The next NAB Cup game might provide some information for who will be playing in the middle, and increasing their fantasy stats. A rookie will probably be elevated due to the Hasleby injury, so Ryley Dunn could be back on the team.

Hawthorn

Birchall - 11 kicks, 8 handballs, 5 marks.
It looks like he will be a great fantasy defender again, so worth his price.

Murphy - 10 kicks, 9 handballs, 4 marks, 3 frees for.
Might find a spot in their side as the third tall defender.

Williams - 6 kicks, 3 marks.
Will do more next game he plays, but did some good things here too.

Morton - 10 kicks, 7 marks, 2 goals.
The Morton family are suited to fantasy leagues that consider kicking accuracy.

Muston - 10 kicks, 8 handballs, 6 marks, 2 tackles.
May not be in their best 22, but with suspensions to other Hawks he could be in for round 1 and 2.

Kennedy - 7 possessions, 3 marks, 2 tackles.
Another young player there who could get fantasy points if he got the playing time.

Sydney

White - 8 possessions, 5 hitouts.
Another promising preseason game from him, should play some real games this year.

Roberts-Thomson - 13 handballs, 5 kicks, 4 marks, 8 hitouts.
Stats went up with no Everitt, Jolly, Barry and C Bolton.

Jack - 11 kicks, 7 handballs, 4 tackles.
The Swans have a few injury worries, so Jack might be in their round 1 team.

Mattner - 10 kicks, 9 handballs.
If Malceski is out for the season, Mattner will be asked to play a more important role.

Bird - 9 kicks, 8 handballs, 6 marks, 6 tackles.
Someone to put on the fantasy bench, he is cheap but has a lot of skills.

Brabazon - 12 kicks, 7 marks.
One of their many younger players trying to win a spot.

Game Stats

Fremantle

Palmer - 9 kicks, 5 handballs, 1 goal.
Could be the best, for fantasy stats, of the first year AFL players.

Drum - 10 kicks, 10 handballs, 6 marks.
Not guaranteed a spot in round 1, unless he repeats this in their next game.

Headland - 20 kicks, 1 goal.
Only had 1 handball, which is good because kicks bring in more fantasy points.

M Carr - 17 possessions.
Hasleby could be out injured, M Carr has shown he can stop players while also getting the ball he M Carr’s stats could rise now.

Mundy - 2 goals, 12 kicks, 6 marks.
Has the skills for fantasy AFL, and might have the right position on the ground with the new coach in charge.

McPharlin - 10 kicks, 10 marks.
Big defenders are not usually the best for fantasy points, but McPharlin contributes solid stats.

West Coast

Seaby - 2 goals, 7 kicks, 7 marks.
The goals are important, that might keep him on the ground when Cox is back in the side.

McNamara - 8 kicks, 8 handballs.
If the Eagles pick him in round 1, a lot of fantasy teams will too.

Nicoski - 8 handballs, 5 kicks.
Should be a good signing this season for fantasy footy teams as he is over his injuries.

Staker - 6 kicks, 10 handballs, 4 marks, 4 tackles.
Was contesting some hitouts against Sandilands, Staker won't be doing that with Cox back.

Ebert - 6 kicks, 6 handballs, 2 tackles.
A solid debut at AFL level.

LeCras - 12 kicks, 2 goals.
Could have kicked a couple more goals too, so he can help fantasy teams as he is usually very accurate.

It looks like another player that was going to be signed for the AFL Insider fantasy footy team is injured before the season starts. Like Rhett Biglands, Malceski is expected to miss the entire season with a knee injury.

From the Sydney site: Malceski likely to miss season

“It looks like [an ACL injury], the doctors are pretty certain,” Roos said shortly after the match.

“I think it shows you how important Marty Mattner coming across the line was,” Roos said, after the former Crow looked poised in a similar role on Sunday.

From The Age: Swans lose match and Malceski

Malceski underwent reconstructive surgery on his left knee in 2002. He returned to claim a regular place in the Swans line-up and then, last year, became one of their most effective players filling the void left by the injured Tadhg Kennelly with his explosive run and long-kicking from half-back and making the shortlist for All-Australian selection.

AFL Fantasy Impact:

Mattner was brought in by the Swans to play an important role but with Malceski out it will mean Mattner does a bit more. Mattner should have a big fantasy season after leaving Adelaide during the trade period. Barlow is another player that could benefit with more playing time due to Malceksi's injury. Someone like Bevan could have more consistent playing time now too, and the Swans could also look to a younger player as well, with several of their younger players performing well in the NAB Cup game.

Geelong

Ling - 35 possessions.
He won't be that prolific in the real games, but is still a good player to have.

Prismall - 35 possessions.
That is a big number, but he may not make the team for the real games.

Stokes - 35 possessions, 5 marks, 5 tackles, 4 frees for.
His numbers should increase from last season's, but not that much.

Lonergan - 2 goals, 6 marks.
Did a bit more than Hawkins, in the position battle to replace N Ablett.

Taylor - 10 handballs, 7 kicks, 4 marks.
Could be useful in the early rounds if Egan, and maybe Scarlett, are out.

Wojcinski - 13 kicks, 12 handballs, 2 goals.
An excitement machine last year, but this season he might become a fantasy stats machine.

Melbourne

Garland - 3 goals, 8 kicks.
Their best forward this game, Neitz didn't play.

Meesen - 15 possessions, 1 goal.
Seems to have the edge over Jamar and P Johnson.

White - 11 kicks, 8 handballs, 8 marks.
Was used in several positions, which is good for stats.

McDonald - 24 possessions, 5 tackles.
He will always try and always bring in stats.

Buckley - 9 kicks, 8 handballs, 1 goal.
Will be cheap in fantasy leagues.

Bell - 11 possessions, 6 frees against.
He should be an improved player for stats, but this game wasn't great.

Game Stats

Carlton

Hampson - 12 possessions, 11 hitouts, 2 goals, 5 frees for.
Was very active, ruck spot still unsettled there.

Kreuzer - 6 possessions, 1 goal.
They are bringing him on slowly, but he still showed his skills here.

Thornton - 2 goals, 11 possessions.
Maybe they found their replacement for Whitnall and Kennedy.

Stevens - 9 kicks, 3 handballs, 3 tackles.
First game in a long time.

Bower - 7 handballs, 2 kicks, 5 tackles.
Not the best kick-to-handball ratio there.

Carrazzo - 24 possessions, 3 marks, 5 tackles.
Looks like he will still get plenty of stats despite new additions to the side.

Port Adelaide

Boak - 12 kicks, 10 handballs, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 3 frees for.
Considering his stats potential, he could be a fantasy bargain, this season's Pendlebury.

Salopek - 18 kicks, 9 handballs, 9 marks, 3 goals.
Will be very good, but not that great when the Cornes and Burgoynes play too.

Logan - 7 marks, 4 tackles, 11 handballs, 8 kicks, 2 frees for, 1 goal.
A good sign when a player contributes in numerous statistics.

Thomas - 21 handballs, 5 kicks.
If he gets a chance at big minutes, he will be a fantasy steal.

M Motlop - 10 kicks, 6 handballs.
He can play like a Motlop, but Power have a lot of depth at his position.

Krakouer - 11 kicks, 5 handballs.
Another player there who could be a fantasy star, if he gets the playing time.

Game Stats

Essendon

Hille - 3 goals, 19 hitouts, 7 marks, 13 possessions.
With the Bombers down in key forwards, there was time for both ruckmen to star.

Laycock - 11 possessions, 4 marks, 15 hitouts.
If Essendon play only one of Hille and Laycock, they will be a star fantasy ruckman.

Dempsey - 12 handballs, 7 kicks.
Collected a lot of the football at half back, where plenty of fantasy points are found.

Nash - 27 possessions.
He did increase his production, but several midfield stars were missing from this game.

Dyson - 11 kicks, 11 handballs.
A good chance to be a fantasy steal in 2008.

Johnson - 13 handballs, 10 kicks.
He might have one good year left, but still a risky signing.

Brisbane

Henderson - 3 goals, 5 marks, 9 kicks.
Good stats with Brown absent, but could be a good fantasy forward for the bench.

Leuenberger - 19 hitouts, 5 possessions, 2 tackles.
Didn't have it easy going against two big bodies, still showed some of his class.

Brennan - 11 possessions, 3 goals, 3 marks.
You never know what he will do, this time he was very good for stats.

Proud - 11 handballs, 4 kicks, 2 tackles, 3 frees for.
He got noticed with how he played, might get him into their round 1 team, and some fantasy teams.

Patfull - 11 possessions, 8 marks.
A few more stats than he usually has.

Johnstone - 16 kicks, 3 handballs, 2 frees for.
He seemed to fit in well, should be a solid fantasy player in 2008.

St Kilda

C Gardiner - 10 marks, 15 kicks, 2 frees for.
A great game for him, but obviously when Riewoldt returns it will mean C Gardiner sits.

M Gardiner - 2 kicks, 14 hitouts.
Started the game in the ruck, didn't do a lot.

King - 8 kicks, 16 hitouts.
Picked up some possessions in the back half as he filled in the space.

Gehrig - 8 marks, 8 kicks, 3 goals.
Retirement didn't change him.

S Fisher - 13 kicks, 7 marks.
They may have paid him twice last year, but he did deserve extra.

Armitage - 8 possessions, 6 tackles, 2 frees for, 3 frees against.
There might be some fantasy value there with Armitage.

Richmond

Deledio - 11 kicks, 8 marks, 5 tackles, 2 goals.
Looks like he can help fantasy teams if Richmond play him as a forward.

McMahon - 11 kicks, 5 handballs.
May not help Richmond win, but he will probably help fantasy teams.

Richardson - 10 kicks, 7 handballs, 7 marks, 1 goal.
He was all over the ground, not a bad thing for fantasy stats.

Simmonds - 7 kicks, 7 marks, 12 hitouts.
Not back to his best yet, but should be a good player in fantasy AFL again.

Moore - 13 kicks, 5 marks.
He had a great game.

Brown - 7 kicks, 6 handballs, 5 marks, 2 goals.
Useful numbers for fantasy teams.

Game Stats

Western Bulldogs

Cooney - 13 kicks, 13 handballs.
He had plenty of the ball.

Eagleton - 17 kicks, 5 marks, 1 goal.
Also kicked 3 behinds, so he can do a bit better.

Hudson - 8 possessions, 14 hitouts.
Didn't do a lot in his first game with his new club.

Welsh - 3 kicks, 3 tackles, 1 goal.
They didn't really kick the ball to him a lot.

Murphy - 13 possessions, 6 marks.
Still asked to play too big, his miss from right in front was something to see.

Lake - 6 possessions, 2 frees against.
Maybe Brian Harris was better.

North Melbourne Kangaroos

Edwards - 10 kicks, 7 marks.
Was marking the ball well in difficult conditions.

N Thompson - 2 kicks.
Still a long way to go.

Harding - 13 possessions, 3 frees for, 2 frees against.
He was in the action, might be a good, and cheap, fantasy signing.

S Thompson - 6 kicks, 4 handballs, 2 frees for.
Look like he belonged at AFL level.

Power - 2 kicks, 5 handballs.
This time he helped the Bulldogs get a win, Sam might make fantasy teams powerless.

Adams - 5 kicks, 3 tackles, 2 frees for, 2 goals.
Fantasy potential as a small forward.
