Here are the Yahoo fantasy NFL teams that were recently drafted.
Probably try to get your fantasy team to look more like the top one, it looks much better with the big names like Brady, Owens, Bush and Gates.
Some tips, when drafting bench players try to get those who don’t have the same bye week as the starter in the same position. A good defensive team to pick is often one that also has a good offense, New England and Minnesota were selected because they can control the ball with their offense, leaving less time of possession to be scored against. Fantasy NFL tight ends are like AFL fantasy ruckmen, there seem to be very few good ones, so draft a highly-ranked tight end like Gates.
Drafting 8th overall.

The Bombers lost a lot of experience, from their playing group and also their coach, and that means there are opportunities for some of the younger Bombers to step up in season 2008. Expect Monfries to fire in a new role with increased minutes in the midfield.
From The Age: Monfries stakes his claim for a midfield role
"It's learning off some of the better players about how they go about playing through the midfield," Monfries said yesterday. "What I'm trying to do this year is step up into that midfield role and get out of half-forward, and by playing on some of the better guys there you just learn where they run and how they get ball.
Like a legion of younger Essendon players upon whom more responsibility will be thrust in 2008, Monfries is relishing a new coaching regime, and a markedly different pre-season to previous years.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Essendon have several players who could now move into the middle, and score much higher in fantasy points. Monfries is as good as any of the other younger Bombers to take a chance on for fantasy teams. Even if he doesn't have a huge year he can bring in fantasy points with a few goals if he is played forward, but if he does have a huge year he will help fantasy teams as he grabs some of the possessions that are available with Hird and others gone.
The Dockers may be a chance to win the preseason competition, even with Hasleby out of the lineup. Pavlich is their main man, and he might have some assistance from Chris Mayne.
From the Fremantle site: Changes planned for Adelaide clash
Fremantle will make at least five changes to the line up that accounted for West Coast on Sunday for their round two NAB Cup clash against Adelaide this Sunday.
Chris Mayne will come into the side after sitting out of Fremantle’s 44 point win over the Eagles and is a strong chance to feature in the club’s rotating midfield. Sixteen players had roles in the centre for Fremantle at the weekend and it is something Mark will experiment with more over the pre-season to see which players will be able to offer solid contributions when moved to the midfield.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Mayne played a great game for the Dockers when they were in South Africa. That was as a medium forward, which isn't something that will be available to him during the regular season with Headland, Solomon, Murphy and Campbell among the options to play next to Pavlich, Tarrant and Farmer. But maybe Mayne could rotate through the forward line, midfield and bench, swapping around with someone like Headland. While that may not provide a lot of minutes and stats for Mayne, if he does get into the Dockers lineup he will only have to do a little to have a useful fantasy price rise.

2008 fantasy stats change from 2007: Injured!
Notes: Expected to miss all of season 2008, knee injury.
The Bulldogs are one of several teams that had players injured during the weekend games. Although Farren Ray's injury is not as serious as those of Malceski and Hasleby. But it does seem that Ray won't be ready when the Bulldogs play in round 1.
From the Herald Sun: Injury curse strikes early
Western Bulldog Farren Ray is the latest injury casualty. In a big blow, the midfielder is set to miss the start of the home-and-away season.
Ray will miss four to six weeks after suffering a cracked fibula in the club's 11-point NAB Cup win against the Kangaroos on Friday night.
From the Western Bulldogs site: Softly softly approach for cautious Dogs
"[Lindsay] Gilbee, [Jarrod] Harbrow and [Farren] Ray won't play, and Ryan Griffen won't play either, because he's got some family involvement in Adelaide," Eade said on Tuesday.
"We'll probably be down to the bare numbers, to be honest. Hopefully Shaun Higgins will be right, Andrew McDougall we're hoping will come back, but he may not get up.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
It probably doesn't change a lot there, but maybe it makes Griffen, Higgins or Giansiracusa a slightly better signing. West and Cross will still do a lot of the work in the middle, with Boyd and Cooney also capable of a lot of possessions.
While the Bulldogs did defeat the Kangaroos last weekend, they did not find a big forward to help out Johnson, Murphy and Welsh. There was talk that Minson could play against Essendon. Neither Minson or McDougall are expensive in fantasy leagues, but one of them would have to have a big NAB Cup game before being considered for a fantasy team.

Whitnall and Mr Kennedy are gone, and now Brad Fisher will miss a few games with a hand injury. Fevola has the whole forward line to himself, something that he won’t mind.
From the Carlton site: Fisher’s bad break
The 70-gamer, now in his sixth season at senior level, underwent surgery on Monday afternoon to have a pin inserted in his thumb.
Fisher is expected to miss six to eight weeks.
From The Age: Fisher out for 8 weeks
"We have four weeks, nearly five, before the first round, so he could miss three to four weeks of the season," Icke said. "… Putting the pin in should help the recovery but I think it would be safe to assume he will miss round one.
Having lost Josh Kennedy through the Judd trade and with a preference for Jarrad Waite to hold down centre half-back, the club had developed a hole at centre half-forward it was hoping Fisher could fill. "We have a few options for players we will look at," Icke said. "Richard Hadley is waiting to come back (from injury) and he could play that role. He has played similar roles for Brisbane and he is some chance to play this weekend."
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Brad Fisher was not going to be their real centre half forward, but in terms of fantasy footy stats and also helping Carlton as an option behind Fevola he is just as important. The idea at Carlton seemed to be that they would just place a big body at centre half forward, like Hartlett or Hampson, with Fevola their primary forward and Fisher next in line.
With Fisher out, they could replace him with someone like Grigg, Wiggins or Edwards. All those three have similar characteristics to Fisher, with covering plenty of ground and being a good mark of the football.
Maybe, for a few games at least, their centre half forward does get a lot more of the ball directed to them. Hartlett and Hampson are inexpensive in fantasy leagues and worth looking at. C Cloke and S O’hAilpin are other options Carlton have for centre half forward, but they are not cheap in fantasy leagues. Cain Ackland is between those two above groups on fantasy price.
Fevola was going to have plenty of the ball directed towards him even if Fisher was there, so for the opening rounds it would seem that Fevola would be expected to have more stats than he usually does.

The Dockers played very well in their NAB Cup game against the West Coast Eagles, and looked like a team headed back to the top 8 after a disappointing 2007, but Fremantle now have to deal with a long-term injury to one of their best players, Paul Hasleby.
From The West Australian: NAB Cup knee injury ends Hasleby’s season
Hasleby’s left knee buckled under pressure from Adam Selwood and Matt Spangher in the third quarter of Sunday’s 44-point victory, leaving Hasleby in agony.
“The left knee injury sustained in last night’s game against West Coast will now require a full knee reconstruction,” the club statement said.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
He was one of their main players in the middle, getting the ball out of the congestion and delivering it to his teammates. There are now a lot of possessions available for someone else. It could be an old player who takes on more centre square minutes, like Bell or McManus, or a younger player like Peake or Schammer. They can also put into the centre some former Bombers with Solomon, Mark Johnson and Bradley all Dockers now. It might get a bit confusing there, as their other “M Johnson” could also be moved into the middle, Michael Johnson. The next NAB Cup game might provide some information for who will be playing in the middle, and increasing their fantasy stats. A rookie will probably be elevated due to the Hasleby injury, so Ryley Dunn could be back on the team.

Hawthorn
Birchall - 11 kicks, 8 handballs, 5 marks.
It looks like he will be a great fantasy defender again, so worth his price.
Murphy - 10 kicks, 9 handballs, 4 marks, 3 frees for.
Might find a spot in their side as the third tall defender.
Williams - 6 kicks, 3 marks.
Will do more next game he plays, but did some good things here too.
Morton - 10 kicks, 7 marks, 2 goals.
The Morton family are suited to fantasy leagues that consider kicking accuracy.
Muston - 10 kicks, 8 handballs, 6 marks, 2 tackles.
May not be in their best 22, but with suspensions to other Hawks he could be in for round 1 and 2.
Kennedy - 7 possessions, 3 marks, 2 tackles.
Another young player there who could get fantasy points if he got the playing time.
Sydney
White - 8 possessions, 5 hitouts.
Another promising preseason game from him, should play some real games this year.
Roberts-Thomson - 13 handballs, 5 kicks, 4 marks, 8 hitouts.
Stats went up with no Everitt, Jolly, Barry and C Bolton.
Jack - 11 kicks, 7 handballs, 4 tackles.
The Swans have a few injury worries, so Jack might be in their round 1 team.
Mattner - 10 kicks, 9 handballs.
If Malceski is out for the season, Mattner will be asked to play a more important role.
Bird - 9 kicks, 8 handballs, 6 marks, 6 tackles.
Someone to put on the fantasy bench, he is cheap but has a lot of skills.
Brabazon - 12 kicks, 7 marks.
One of their many younger players trying to win a spot.
Game Stats
Fremantle
Palmer - 9 kicks, 5 handballs, 1 goal.
Could be the best, for fantasy stats, of the first year AFL players.
Drum - 10 kicks, 10 handballs, 6 marks.
Not guaranteed a spot in round 1, unless he repeats this in their next game.
Headland - 20 kicks, 1 goal.
Only had 1 handball, which is good because kicks bring in more fantasy points.
M Carr - 17 possessions.
Hasleby could be out injured, M Carr has shown he can stop players while also getting the ball he M Carr’s stats could rise now.
Mundy - 2 goals, 12 kicks, 6 marks.
Has the skills for fantasy AFL, and might have the right position on the ground with the new coach in charge.
McPharlin - 10 kicks, 10 marks.
Big defenders are not usually the best for fantasy points, but McPharlin contributes solid stats.
West Coast
Seaby - 2 goals, 7 kicks, 7 marks.
The goals are important, that might keep him on the ground when Cox is back in the side.
McNamara - 8 kicks, 8 handballs.
If the Eagles pick him in round 1, a lot of fantasy teams will too.
Nicoski - 8 handballs, 5 kicks.
Should be a good signing this season for fantasy footy teams as he is over his injuries.
Staker - 6 kicks, 10 handballs, 4 marks, 4 tackles.
Was contesting some hitouts against Sandilands, Staker won't be doing that with Cox back.
Ebert - 6 kicks, 6 handballs, 2 tackles.
A solid debut at AFL level.
LeCras - 12 kicks, 2 goals.
Could have kicked a couple more goals too, so he can help fantasy teams as he is usually very accurate.
Game Stats
It looks like another player that was going to be signed for the AFL Insider fantasy footy team is injured before the season starts. Like Rhett Biglands, Malceski is expected to miss the entire season with a knee injury.
From the Sydney site: Malceski likely to miss season
“It looks like [an ACL injury], the doctors are pretty certain,” Roos said shortly after the match.
“I think it shows you how important Marty Mattner coming across the line was,” Roos said, after the former Crow looked poised in a similar role on Sunday.
From The Age: Swans lose match and Malceski
Malceski underwent reconstructive surgery on his left knee in 2002. He returned to claim a regular place in the Swans line-up and then, last year, became one of their most effective players filling the void left by the injured Tadhg Kennelly with his explosive run and long-kicking from half-back and making the shortlist for All-Australian selection.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Mattner was brought in by the Swans to play an important role but with Malceski out it will mean Mattner does a bit more. Mattner should have a big fantasy season after leaving Adelaide during the trade period. Barlow is another player that could benefit with more playing time due to Malceksi's injury. Someone like Bevan could have more consistent playing time now too, and the Swans could also look to a younger player as well, with several of their younger players performing well in the NAB Cup game.

2008 fantasy stats change from 2007: Up!

2008 fantasy stats change from 2007: Up!!
Notes: Adds some pace to their team, so he might play plenty of games in 2008.
Geelong
Ling - 35 possessions.
He won't be that prolific in the real games, but is still a good player to have.
Prismall - 35 possessions.
That is a big number, but he may not make the team for the real games.
Stokes - 35 possessions, 5 marks, 5 tackles, 4 frees for.
His numbers should increase from last season's, but not that much.
Lonergan - 2 goals, 6 marks.
Did a bit more than Hawkins, in the position battle to replace N Ablett.
Taylor - 10 handballs, 7 kicks, 4 marks.
Could be useful in the early rounds if Egan, and maybe Scarlett, are out.
Wojcinski - 13 kicks, 12 handballs, 2 goals.
An excitement machine last year, but this season he might become a fantasy stats machine.
Melbourne
Garland - 3 goals, 8 kicks.
Their best forward this game, Neitz didn't play.
Meesen - 15 possessions, 1 goal.
Seems to have the edge over Jamar and P Johnson.
White - 11 kicks, 8 handballs, 8 marks.
Was used in several positions, which is good for stats.
McDonald - 24 possessions, 5 tackles.
He will always try and always bring in stats.
Buckley - 9 kicks, 8 handballs, 1 goal.
Will be cheap in fantasy leagues.
Bell - 11 possessions, 6 frees against.
He should be an improved player for stats, but this game wasn't great.
Game Stats
Carlton
Hampson - 12 possessions, 11 hitouts, 2 goals, 5 frees for.
Was very active, ruck spot still unsettled there.
Kreuzer - 6 possessions, 1 goal.
They are bringing him on slowly, but he still showed his skills here.
Thornton - 2 goals, 11 possessions.
Maybe they found their replacement for Whitnall and Kennedy.
Stevens - 9 kicks, 3 handballs, 3 tackles.
First game in a long time.
Bower - 7 handballs, 2 kicks, 5 tackles.
Not the best kick-to-handball ratio there.
Carrazzo - 24 possessions, 3 marks, 5 tackles.
Looks like he will still get plenty of stats despite new additions to the side.
Port Adelaide
Boak - 12 kicks, 10 handballs, 3 marks, 3 tackles, 3 frees for.
Considering his stats potential, he could be a fantasy bargain, this season's Pendlebury.
Salopek - 18 kicks, 9 handballs, 9 marks, 3 goals.
Will be very good, but not that great when the Cornes and Burgoynes play too.
Logan - 7 marks, 4 tackles, 11 handballs, 8 kicks, 2 frees for, 1 goal.
A good sign when a player contributes in numerous statistics.
Thomas - 21 handballs, 5 kicks.
If he gets a chance at big minutes, he will be a fantasy steal.
M Motlop - 10 kicks, 6 handballs.
He can play like a Motlop, but Power have a lot of depth at his position.
Krakouer - 11 kicks, 5 handballs.
Another player there who could be a fantasy star, if he gets the playing time.
Game Stats
Essendon
Hille - 3 goals, 19 hitouts, 7 marks, 13 possessions.
With the Bombers down in key forwards, there was time for both ruckmen to star.
Laycock - 11 possessions, 4 marks, 15 hitouts.
If Essendon play only one of Hille and Laycock, they will be a star fantasy ruckman.
Dempsey - 12 handballs, 7 kicks.
Collected a lot of the football at half back, where plenty of fantasy points are found.
Nash - 27 possessions.
He did increase his production, but several midfield stars were missing from this game.
Dyson - 11 kicks, 11 handballs.
A good chance to be a fantasy steal in 2008.
Johnson - 13 handballs, 10 kicks.
He might have one good year left, but still a risky signing.
Brisbane
Henderson - 3 goals, 5 marks, 9 kicks.
Good stats with Brown absent, but could be a good fantasy forward for the bench.
Leuenberger - 19 hitouts, 5 possessions, 2 tackles.
Didn't have it easy going against two big bodies, still showed some of his class.
Brennan - 11 possessions, 3 goals, 3 marks.
You never know what he will do, this time he was very good for stats.
Proud - 11 handballs, 4 kicks, 2 tackles, 3 frees for.
He got noticed with how he played, might get him into their round 1 team, and some fantasy teams.
Patfull - 11 possessions, 8 marks.
A few more stats than he usually has.
Johnstone - 16 kicks, 3 handballs, 2 frees for.
He seemed to fit in well, should be a solid fantasy player in 2008.

St Kilda
C Gardiner - 10 marks, 15 kicks, 2 frees for.
A great game for him, but obviously when Riewoldt returns it will mean C Gardiner sits.
M Gardiner - 2 kicks, 14 hitouts.
Started the game in the ruck, didn't do a lot.
King - 8 kicks, 16 hitouts.
Picked up some possessions in the back half as he filled in the space.
Gehrig - 8 marks, 8 kicks, 3 goals.
Retirement didn't change him.
S Fisher - 13 kicks, 7 marks.
They may have paid him twice last year, but he did deserve extra.
Armitage - 8 possessions, 6 tackles, 2 frees for, 3 frees against.
There might be some fantasy value there with Armitage.
Richmond
Deledio - 11 kicks, 8 marks, 5 tackles, 2 goals.
Looks like he can help fantasy teams if Richmond play him as a forward.
McMahon - 11 kicks, 5 handballs.
May not help Richmond win, but he will probably help fantasy teams.
Richardson - 10 kicks, 7 handballs, 7 marks, 1 goal.
He was all over the ground, not a bad thing for fantasy stats.
Simmonds - 7 kicks, 7 marks, 12 hitouts.
Not back to his best yet, but should be a good player in fantasy AFL again.
Moore - 13 kicks, 5 marks.
He had a great game.

Useful numbers for fantasy teams.
Game Stats

He had plenty of the ball.
Eagleton - 17 kicks, 5 marks, 1 goal.
Also kicked 3 behinds, so he can do a bit better.

Didn't do a lot in his first game with his new club.
Welsh - 3 kicks, 3 tackles, 1 goal.
They didn't really kick the ball to him a lot.
Murphy - 13 possessions, 6 marks.
Still asked to play too big, his miss from right in front was something to see.
Lake - 6 possessions, 2 frees against.
Maybe Brian Harris was better.
North Melbourne Kangaroos
Edwards - 10 kicks, 7 marks.
Was marking the ball well in difficult conditions.
N Thompson - 2 kicks.
Still a long way to go.
Harding - 13 possessions, 3 frees for, 2 frees against.
He was in the action, might be a good, and cheap, fantasy signing.
S Thompson - 6 kicks, 4 handballs, 2 frees for.
Look like he belonged at AFL level.
Power - 2 kicks, 5 handballs.
This time he helped the Bulldogs get a win, Sam might make fantasy teams powerless.

Fantasy potential as a small forward.

Notes: A consistent fantasy forward for stats.
B Lachland Hansen
B Albert Proud
C Jamie McNamara
C Rhys Palmer
R Matthew Leuenberger
R Ivan Maric
F Anthony Corrie
F Tom Hawkins
Hansen or Proud would have been considered to be solid signings for a fantasy bench a year ago, although it didn't really work too well when the actual games started. If the Kangaroos can't find a spot this season for an athletic tall who was top 3 in the draft they might have a problem, as would the fantasy teams that have him again this season. Brisbane do have plenty of depth among their smaller players, so it won't be easy for Proud to win a spot but if he does he could be a good producer of fantasy points.
There were a lot of changes at West Coast and that might open up playing time for McNamara. He should be at a low fantasy price. Palmer seems to be one of the best first year players to sign. Fremantle were old and slow in the middle last year, Palmer is young and quick and was their top draft pick so the Dockers will want him in the team.
Maybe there is only enough salary cap left for one of Leuenberger and Maric, although having both should mean the ruck spot is under control for the entire season. Maric seems to have the lead in the race to be Adelaide's number 1 ruckman, although there are two or three others that Adelaide will consider. At Brisbane, there is Charman and Leuenberger, and that is all in the ruck. Even splitting minutes with Charman, Leuenberger is going to be well worth his fantasy price. If Charman missed games during the season, Leuenberger would be huge for stats.
Once again, until the official prices are released, there may not be enough money left for the two players listed on the forwards bench. Hawkins should be who Geelong pick at full forward, without N Ablett there it is expected that Hawkins will bring in plenty of goals and marks. Corrie has been injured, delisted and then rookie-listed and promoted back to the senior list by Brisbane, and he also showed late last season that he can get the ball when they play him. If he is cheap he will be a good player for the bench, but if his price is higher than expected a better alternative for this spot could be Sellar or Leigh Harding, if Harding is eligible as a forward like has was in previous seasons.

From The Age: Harding destined for defence
Harding has lost none of his pace, said Laidley, who is hopeful the 26-year-old can cement a spot in the back line.
"He has got good pace, he kicks the ball well, he should be able to run the lines and penetrate the game. (But) he has got a lot of things to learn," Laidley said.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
It was only a couple of years ago when Harding was the Kangaroos equal-second best for goals, although that was also when Saverio Rocca was in the team so things have changed since Harding was a forward. The back line is where players can get plenty of easy fantasy points, Archer is gone, and Smith does have an injury at the moment, so there is an opportunity for Harding to play an important role.

F Nick Reiwoldt
F Ryan O'Keefe
F Jonathan Brown
F Robert Murphy
F Gary Ablett
F Quinten Lynch
F Sean Rusling
Riewoldt and Brown will cost a lot and do a lot. Last season it wasn't the best idea to have these players in round 1 fantasy teams, as Riewoldt was injured and Brown had a very high fantasy price, but this time around they are ready to play and worth their price.
If Ablett and Murphy are eligible as forwards it will increase their worth to fantasy teams. G Ablett is one of the biggest fantasy stars while Murphy can bring in plenty of stats wherever the Bulldogs play him. If one of them is not eligible to play as a fantasy forward, then Deledio might be someone else to put in that spot, as long as Deledio is a forward in fantasy.
R O'Keefe might have to increase his already high work-rate if Hall and O'Loughlin decline in their fantasy numbers. Big Q is still one of the only ways for the Eagles to score goals, so they should continue kicking it to him and he will be consistent for fantasy points. In most games, Lynch brings in fantasy points with his goals, but there were times last season when he ran all over the ground for marks and kicks.
Rusling is the missing piece for the Collingwood forward line, if he is finally healthy it could mean plenty of marks, kicks and goals.
A Possible 2008 Dream Team AFL Fantasy Side - Rucks
With some AFL fans reeling from the news of umpire Goldspink's impending retirement, there is also another person who won't be out on the football field. Giant Brisbane ruckman Beau McDonald is done. Injuries limited him over many years, but he did win a Grand Final.
This does change some of the plans that Brisbane had, and also questions trading away Wood as well as some of their drafting choices. But the Lions did the right thing when they sent out Wood. They had to come up with new contracts for Charman, Leuenberger and Wood, and could really only afford two of them. Charman was proven and had to be retained. Extending Leuenberger's deal was the smartest thing the Lions have done in a long time, as soon as he gets close to having an expiring contract there will be 15 other clubs chasing him. One problem the Lions might have is that they didn't draft a real ruckman to have as a backup, and there were some available in the draft from Queensland that they overlooked.
From The Courier-Mail: Injuries end it for Big Beau
McDonald shocked the Lions yesterday when he said his body, which has endured numerous operations over a horror five-year stretch, could not withstand another AFL season.
Promising ruckman Joel Tippett is set to make his debut in the NAB Cup against Essendon on Saturday night and would be a leading contender.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Charman and Leuenberger were always going to be the starting ruckmen in Brisbane, and the ones helping fantasy teams, so this news doesn't change things. It probably makes Leuenberger an even better choice for fantasy teams, and he would be a great player to have as the backup ruckman on the fantasy bench. But if one of them is injured, it could open up minutes for someone to contribute fantasy points. Henderson and Clark could be used in the ruck if needed, Joel Tippett would have the low, low price that all rookies in fantasy have so if he is elevated and does play a few games he will rapidly increase in price.
The Eagles lost a lot of their midfield power during the offseason, but they still have plenty of capable players to fill their onball group. Staker was used occasionally as a ruckman early in 2007 when Dean Cox was out, this time Staker could be in the midfield with Cox directing the ball to him.
From the West Coast site: Staker to plug Eagles’ midfield
“We’ll wait and see whether Stenglein’s fit as well – he probably won’t play,” he said. “So it’s a great opportunity. Jamie McNamara, Matt Priddis, David Wirrpanda, Brent Staker, Will Schofield, Shannon Hurn – there’s a lot of different guys that we will potentially have a look at through there.”
In close to 100 matches for the club, Staker hasn’t laid claim to a permanent position, but Worsfold said his ability to pinch-hit for the side was very valuable.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
At various times during his career, Staker has put together a few weeks of great fantasy stats but then been injured, dropped by West Coast or played in a different spot for lower stats. If he can secure a permanent spot in the Eagles' midfield it will help his fantasy points.
McNamara showed potential last season. He would be a good player to have on a fantasy bench. Hurn has the skills, if he gets a role in the middle he could become a star fantasy player.

There are not a lot of minutes available in the Geelong midfield, even for Joel Selwood, so if he wants to play more he will need to find some extra minutes as a defender or forward.
From The Geelong Advertiser: Young Cat Joel Selwood eyes the backline as he goes forward
``I'm looking to play a bit more this year and even if it was to go down back or up forward, I've just got to learn a whole lot of different positions now.''
``I love it across the half-back line, so I've worked a little bit on my game down there and hopefully (I'll) be able to blend in down there every now and then,'' Selwood said.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Last season, Selwood started on the bench and then went into the middle. If he started the game in a back pocket and then moved into the centre later in the quarter it would mean a large increase in playing time and probably a few more stats too.
Never underestimate the power of the Schwarz, that was significant in Spaceballs and the Bulldogs hope it will be good for footballs.
From the Herald Sun: Schwarz to help Bulldogs
Schwarz will work closely with key forwards, such as Will Minson, and the resting ruckmen, recruit Scott Welsh, Brad Johnson, the promising Tom Williams, Cameron Wight and Robert Murphy.
"I can relate to 'Murph' more than most. He had a reco, he's been near the top of his club and fallen over with injury and he knows what it's like to get back," Schwarz said.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
The only way that Minson or Wight will be useful on fantasy teams is if they become the centre half forward for the Bulldogs. Johnson will always be a fantasy star. Welsh should again kick around 50 goals.
Murphy might be at his best for fantasy AFL on a half back flank, but it seems he will be a forward. If he is played as one of the prime marking options it won’t be good for his health, going up against some of the bigger key defenders. If Murphy splits his time leading from half forward to the middle of the ground and also some minutes close to goal it will bring in the most fantasy points.
Tom Williams being mentioned among the possible forwards would be a change. He was drafted as a midfield prospect, and after all his injury problems he debuted as a key defender.

Lachlan Henderson was taken early in the draft by the Brisbane Lions and Brisbane fans will get an early look at him in the NAB Cup game. With injuries possibly keeping a few other tall forwards out of the lineup for the regular season opener, Henderson could be combining with Jonathan Brown in the forward 50 when the real games begin.
From Fox Sports: Clark contributes to big man woes
Although Brown will be ready by then, Bradshaw will still be at least a month away from playing and Clark might struggle for selection given Matthews's long-standing rule that players must have had competitive match practice before a senior call-up.
By then Henderson could have impressed enough to earn a spot, either in attack or across half back, making him just the second draftee in 10 years to play his first game in round 1 of his first season at the Lions.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Henderson could provide some financial value for fantasy teams in the first month of the season. If he plays the first 4 or 5 games his initial fantasy price could at least double, which would make him a useful trade asset.
When Brisbane have Bradshaw back to his best, and Brown dominating, there probably won’t be a spot for Henderson up forward. Maybe he can find a spot in the back half, as there isn’t a lot of height back there, although that didn’t seem to be a problem last year for the Lions.
R Jeff White
R Aaron Sandilands
Every year White is a valuable fantasy ruckman. He might be getting a bit older but he still has a bounce in his step, and is a very mobile player that accumulates marks and possessions around the ground as well as bringing in hitouts.
As Sandilands has an advantage over all other ruckmen when it comes to getting his hand to the hitouts, he can help fantasy AFL teams. He hasn't really achieved his best yet too, so he has the potential to bring in more stats and also increase in fantasy price.

One of the more useful parts of a fantasy sports draft kit is when the statistics for the upcoming season are projected. Using stats from the previous season, and often the previous seasons, an estimate can be made for how the player will perform. Injuries, retirements, delistings, coaching changes and the change of playing personnel at their club will also affect their numbers.
Older players sometimes suddenly slow down, others have a gradual decline, although Robert Harvey is a different subject and remains a star. Younger players can take a few years to get it, ruckmen can take half a decade, but there are some first year players who defy the trend and are important fantasy players.
These are estimates, so take them with as many grains of salt as required.
The projected numbers for season 2008 are also accompanied by a brief note and also one word to consider for how 2008 will differ from 2007. For many players, especially the established stars, their numbers will be the Same. Varying degrees of Up and Down are signified by the amount of !!!.
Ten of the biggest fantasy stars at each club will have their projected statistics for season 2008 posted. Then other fantasy contributors, including some worthy of being called fantasy stars, from that club will be addressed in another post here. A few minor players form each club, the quietest of the fantasy sleepers, will be overlooked for projected stats but if there is a specific player that you would like added to the list go to the comments section of the post and leave a note for the player you want information on.
C Chris Judd
C Brent Stanton
C Kane Cornes
C Nick Malceski
C Ryan Griffen
C Shane Edwards
Judd might cost a lot, Edwards should be a bargain, so it all balances out with the salary cap. Judd may not have Dean Cox helping him now, but he should still be one of the best midfielders in fantasy AFL. Richmond have some young players that have shown they are ready for AFL, Edwards should be in the Richmond team every week in 2008.
Stanton and K Cornes will be stars for total possessions. The Bombers will be a different team this year, due to retirements and delistings, and Stanton should be one of their best in the middle. The Bombers also have a couple of other onballers that get a lot of the ball, and while their use of the football is not a problem for dreamteam stats, there were times last year when Watson or Peverill were sat down by the former Essendon coach. Fantasy points can’t be scored on the bench, or in the VFL. Either of the Cornes at Port Adelaide will help fantasy teams.
Malceski was a big improver last season, he should be one of Sydney's best again. Griffen hasn't really taken off yet for stats, 2008 should be his year. Griffen’s price should be very affordable, and with a few big performances early in the season he should increase in value and might also become a trade asset.
A Possible 2008 Dream Team AFL Fantasy Side – Backs
The Swans are complaining about the problems the NAB Cup could supposedly cause, but even without playing a game their injury list is increasing.
From the AFL site: Everitt in doubt for season opener
The Swans start the season proper against the Saints on March 22 at Telstra Dome and Everitt has been listed as being out for up to six weeks with a knee complaint before the opening match against his old club.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
This news is something that fantasy coaches will use to their advantage. If both Jolly and Everitt are solid for fantasy stats when they share time, if one of them is out it must mean the other will have a huge amount of hitouts and other stats. It could also increase Jesse White’s fantasy value.

Port Adelaide had a bunch of first year players who played much better than expected in 2007. If the Power are to improve in 2008 it will be due to these players getting even better.
From Fox Sports: Williams sticks to his plans
"We're looking forward to seeing (last year's debutants) Justin Westhoff, Travis Boak, Nathan Krakouer and Robbie Gray become more experienced, more poised and get a better result for us."
"If the Grand Final was replayed today, three or four spots in the line-up would be up in the air, but the rest would be playing," he said.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Boak before J Selwood in the draft will be argued for a long time, but Port Adelaide are happy with who they got. Fantasy coaches will probably get a useful player for stats with either one of them.
The Hoff should continue to kick goals, and find his way onto numerous fantasy teams.
Playing time for Gray and Krakouer won’t be guaranteed, compared to Boak and J Westhoff. Maybe there will only be room for one of Gray or Krakouer in the Port Adelaide side, with Mahoney retiring it might mean Gray can take his role. Fantasy coaches might also want to consider Marlon Motlop, he could be as good in his first year as Gray and Krakouer were in 2007.

Using estimated prices, a possible Dream Team will be posted over the coming days.
B Heath Shaw
B Lindsay Gilbee
B Jason Gram
B Michael Johnson
B Tadgh Kennelly
B Xavier Ellis
B Daniel Pratt
Heath Shaw and Lindsay Gilbee get a lot of the ball, they are top defenders in every type of AFL fantasy game. Gram should continue to run in space and get a lot of the ball, although maybe Goddard's return could change Gram's role. Johnson didn't really get to his best last season, as he started late due to a suspension, so he might improve more this time. Michael Johnson could one day be a top 5 fantasy defender, combining size, running ability and solid foot and hand skills.
Kennelly might be a bit cheaper than he should be. Ellis has a lot of ability and with more playing time and responsibility his stats should increase. Joel Smith's departure should mean Ellis gets all the minutes on the ground that he deserves. Pratt is usually a solid player for stats who doesn't cost too much.

High-flying forward Daniel Bradshaw will miss the NAB Cup but could be in the Brisbane team when the real stuff starts.
From the Brisbane site: Landing clearance for round one
BRISBANE Lions forward Daniel Bradshaw has ruled out making a NAB Cup appearance, and will continue to aim for a return to the game early in the Telstra AFL Premiership season.
With "still a bit of jumping and landing work to go", the 29-year-old is refusing to put a definite date on his first appearance in over a year, but is excited nonetheless about his impending return.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Last season, opposition teams were sending extra defenders to Jonathan Brown to try to contain him. If they use that tactic in 2008 Bradshaw will have an easy time. Missing a year should bring down Bradshaw’s price in fantasy leagues, so if he is playing at his best it will mean he really helps fantasy teams.

Adelaide
Sellar - 3 goals, 9 kicks, 6 marks.
He was just pencilled in on many fantasy benches.
Goodwin - 4 goals, 5 marks, 9 kicks.
Fewer possessions, but a lot more goals.
McLeod - 7 kicks, 2 goals.
Played forward, not the best spot for fantasy points.
Douglas - 11 possessions, 5 tackles, 1 goal.
He could take a big step up this season, his tackles total was a good sign.
Symes - 13 kicks, 9 handballs, 6 marks.
New team, same state, same potential for stats.
Porplyzia - 22 possessions, 4 tackles, 1 goal.
Was very effective in the middle of the ground.
Collingwood
Thomas - 10 marks, 13 kicks.
He has improved every year in his career, so he could be even better this season.
Medhurst - 10 marks, 9 kicks, 9 handballs.
A good amount of possessions for someone who is often a forward pocket.
Iles - 21 possessions, 4 tackles.
Very active, but not guaranteed a spot in the team.
H Shaw - 28 possessions.
Already playing at his best, an elite fantasy defender.
Reid - 6 kicks, 6 marks, 1 goal.
Might be useful in fantasy AFL if Rocca doesn't play.
Josh Fraser - 16 possessions, 12 hitouts, 3 tackles.
Should be a top fantasy ruckman again this year.

It seems that the Cats are going to choose between a couple of Tommy guns to replace Nathan Ablett up forward. Although with Egan out of the team as well for at least a few rounds, there might be room for both Lonergan and Hawkins in the Geelong side.
From the Geelong site: Race to replace Ablett begins
Hawkins and Lonergan spent three quarters of the scratch match at full-forward on opposing teams before Lonergan was switched on to Hawkins’ side in the final term.
Ten Cats sat out Saturday’s match: Matthew Egan (foot), Matthew Scarlett (knee), Darren Milburn (family commitments), Paul Chapman (groin), Joel Selwood (general soreness) Travis Varcoe (tonsils), Simon Hogan (stress reaction in his foot), Brodie Moles (rookie being rested) and Shane Mumford (rested rookie).
AFL Fantasy Impact:
The VFL Grand Final would not have affected Lonergan’s fantasy price but it would have got the attention of plenty of fantasy coaches. Lonergan showed in that game that he can kick a bunch of goals. But it could be the back line where Lonergan has a real chance for playing in round 1, and he would be a more likely addition to the team at centre half back than someone untried like Harry Taylor.

2003 was the last time that Michael Gardiner was a consistently healthy and contributing player. The Saints think he can get back to that form and he showed he is injury-free during their intra-club match.
From the Herald Sun: Former Eagle ready to fly
While the Saints rested a host of their stars, including star forward Nick Riewoldt, Gardiner joined former Geelong premiership big man Steven King in a new-look St Kilda ruck set-up.
"But he has been in full training for a fair while now and we were always confident that he was going to play today and play Round 1.
From The Age: Gardiner passes test
"There's no No. 1 or No. 2 (ruckman), it's about rotations and sharing the load. One week, one will do 60 per cent and the other 40, it depends on opposition and form, but fundamentally, it will be rotating the role between Rix, King, Gardner and (Justin) Koschitzke."
He said Goddard's recovery from knee surgery was on track. "We're just graduating his competing work . .. he's trying to get up for round one but it's not about round one, we learnt that with Maguire last year," Lyon said.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
The fantasy value of any ruckman at St Kilda is dependant on where Koschitzke is played. If they go with a forward line of Riewoldt, Gehrig and Koschitzke it will mean a lot of available ruck minutes for King, M Gardiner, McEvoy or Rix.
Both King and M Gardiner are expected to be in their NAB Cup team next week, that game could show where Koschitzke plays and who is next in line for the ruck. The price in fantasy leagues for Gardiner and King will be low, but the risk in signing them is still something that will deter many fantasy coaches.

There hasn’t been a lot of talk about this, which might be a good thing as it may not be too serious of a problem, but Jesse Smith is still troubled by ankle injuries.
From The Australian: Saints open wallet to fix old wounds
Smith, who missed the entire 2006 season after an ankle reconstruction, hurt the same right ankle in December and has barely trained with team-mates on the track since.
"We're still hopeful that he'll be right for round one because he had a good build up before Christmas, but we've got to wait on his progress over the next few weeks," McDonald said.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
He was a star last season, the first time he has been healthy, and he was expected to be an improved player this time. At his best, Smith could be a fantasy defender who brings in the points of a star midfielder. But any injury that keep him out of their round 1 team will mean a lot of fantasy coaches look for a different player.
The Eagles decided the Morton family wasn't needed, trading Mitch and deciding not to draft Cale. It seems that Cale Morton could have a big first year of AFL with Melbourne if they continue to play him where they did in their intra-club match.
From the Melbourne site: Young Dees stake their claim
Morton, the Demons' first round selection in last year's AFL National Draft, collected plenty of possessions on the wing and across half-back, while Valenti won his share of clearances in the middle and used the ball with precision.
"[The quality was] probably okay, overall. Our skills were down a bit and there was a little bit of fumbling, but there was still plenty of good passages," he said. "We moved ahead today in preparation for next week. There are a few younger guys that did well, Wonaeamirri, [Isaac] Weetra, [John] Meesen did well around the ground, and [Kyle] Cheney did some nice things.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Cale Morton will be on many benches as a fantasy defender. That will probably be a wise investment, with the potential for plenty of stats and a large and rapid price rise.
Meesen gets another mention and he must be on his way to a spot in their round 1 team. He would not be a bad choice as a 4th ruckman on a fantasy roster. He could be one injury or suspension away from playing big minutes if White or one of their tall forwards miss some games during the season.
The Bulldogs must have got the message, they are trying to put a bigger team on the field. Will Minson would be a big help to their undersized forward structure, Wight would add some height too.
From the Bulldogs site: Aker shines in intra-club gloom
Eade said intra-club games gave him the chance to experiment with a few positions, including trialling Cameron Wight as a tall forward.
"We've been trying that over the pre-season and also tried (Will) Minson up forward, which gives us a bit more size," Eade said. "Cameron's form is alright at the moment and has shown a bit of promise."
AFL Fantasy Impact:
With Hudson's arrival, no other ruckman there will play enough to be on fantasy teams. If Minson is going to get enough stats to be used in fantasy AFL he will need to play centre half forward, with some minutes in the ruck when Hudson needs a rest. Wight has played most of his games in the back line, with a few runs in the ruck too, so the forward line is the last place for him to find a spot.

It seems that every year in Brisbane it begins with an announcement that Ashley McGrath is injured and the season finishes with Ashley McGrath trade rumours. Here is the injury announcement, and in September the talk of a trade to Fremantle or West Coast can begin again.
From the Brisbane site: McGrath to miss NAB Cup
"I'm probably another four weeks away. It's a bit unfortunate that it happened at this time of year. It would have been good if it had happened before Christmas, then I could have been playing NAB Cup.
"Now I'm looking forward to round one or two."
AFL Fantasy Impact:
More Rhan Hooper will be a good thing for the Lions and fantasy teams. With McGrath out of action, Hooper should be getting all the playing time he wants. Hooper might get 30 goals in 2008, and also spend a bit of time in the middle getting possessions. McGrath is very injury-prone, so even when it says he could play in round 1 or 2 it could be later than that.

Looking at the top players for the stats last season, it can be determined where the opportunities will be this year for other players at the club to increase their statistics. Trades, retirements and delistings will take away a few of the fantasy stars of the past. Some of the older players might start to slow down for stats too.

Richmond want to have a fresh, new look for season 2008 and moving Deledio forward permanently would create a forward line with plenty of firepower.
From Fox Sports: Deledio to take pressure off Richo
The club's bold experiment will see Deledio leading from the square, with Richardson positioned 40m out and Nathan Brown and Kayne Pettifer lurking in the forward arc.
Richmond insiders hope that as a 189cm forward with skills and pace, Deledio might average two to three goals a game in the mould of Western Bulldogs forward Brad Johnson, combined with brief midfield appearances.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Probably a bad thing for Deledio’s fantasy points. His possessions totals will take a big hit. But he may be able to compensate for that with contested marking and goals. Deledio did play forward a little bit last year, and even coming off a broken hand he was very capable in the air. So in fantasy leagues that count contested marks, Deledio might still be a fantasy star.
If the fantasy positions have already been assigned, then Deledio will be a fantasy centre who is playing as a forward for his AFL club. If the positions are still being allocated, based on what clubs are saying and where players are put in preseason games, then maybe Deledio becomes a forward in fantasy leagues too. That would increase his fantasy worth.
If Deledio is out of the middle, that allows another player or two to get in the action, and the stats. A chance for Edwards, Connors or Cotchin, when he is healthy, to become a star in the Richmond midfield.
The Tigers only have one injury at the moment, Trent Cotchin won't be available to play in the preseason games for Richmond.
From the Richmond site: Cotchin won't be risked in NAB Cup
RICHMOND’S first pick in the 2007 NAB AFL National Draft, Trent Cotchin, will not feature during the club’s NAB Cup campaign.
The 17-year-old, who underwent ankle surgery before the draft, has suffered achilles soreness and assistant coach David King says the club won’t be risking him.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
There are 22 rounds in the season, so it won't hurt fantasy AFL teams if Trent Cotchin doesn't make it into Richmond's round 1 team. Looking at Joel Selwood's fantasy season in 2007, it took a few rounds for him to cement a regular spot with the Cats and to start producing consistent fantasy points. Selwood was playing for a premiership contender then, Cotchin was the first round choice of the team that finished last in 2007 so Cotchin should be in the Richmond side as soon as his ankle is right. Cotchin could have a similar price rise and points totals to Selwood, although they are different types of players.
An early look at the fantasy value that players might have for season 2008, listing them from best to worst.

2008 AFL Player Fantasy Rating - West Coast
The Cats took a cautious approach with Tom Hawkins last year, but in 2008 they will put him at full forward for round 1 and unleash him on AFL full backs.
From The Geelong Advertiser: Young Cat Tom Hawkins in fit and ready
``Yeah, being a lot fitter and having a few games of experience under my belt I feel I'm looking forward to this year, it's exciting,'' he said.
With the physical aspect of his game coming together, Hawkins, already installed as favourite to win this year's NAB Rising Star award, is also preparing to put his body to good use.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Hawkins should be very popular in fantasy leagues in 2008. Nathan Ablett kicked 34 goals last season, Hawkins might be a chance to double that if Geelong own the midfield again and keep supplying Hawkins with the football.
The Cats drafted several key position prospects, and if Egan is not ready to go when the season starts it could be up to one of the Cats' young players to man a key defensive position. Harry Taylor could be joining Tom Harley in the Geelong back line for round 1.
From the Geelong site: Skipper tips new Cat for defensive post
Egan, who missed last year’s premiership after breaking his foot in round 22, will now undergo bone graft surgery.
“We’ll have to make do with what we’ve got and someone like Harry Taylor, who has come to the club as a mature age recruit, might get an opportunity.”
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Harry Taylor does have a few things that will get him noticed by fantasy coaches. He joins a team that has a vacancy up forward, with N Ablett going away for a while, and a significant hole in the back line for a few early rounds with Egan still hurt. Taylor is also older than many of the players who were just drafted, and is physically ready to play. Taylor's totals for marks and kicks last season in the WAFL were also good numbers for a taller player.
The ruck position at Adelaide may be deeper than expected, as it is being suggested that Kurt Tippett is an option with Biglands injured.
From The Advertiser: Tippett ready to ruck and roll
"The one that's in the shadow a bit and nobody has seen a lot of is Kurt Tippett," Redden, who has been succeeded by Matthew Clarke, said.
"I've got a lot of time for Kurt. He is a real natural ruckman and I had discussions with Craigy about him because he (Neil Craig) would like to see him develop as a forward.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
At this time in his career, Tippett seems better suited to playing as a forward, with only some occasional time in the ruck. But he does have a few advantages over the other ruck candidates. He is a better marking player than Maric and is a lot stronger than Griffin. Those two players do have more experience than Tippett, and that may give them the advantage when Adelaide pick their round 1 team.
Richmond are hoping for a big improvement in 2008, their young stars will keep getting better and they are expecting big seasons from players they traded for.
From the Herald Sun: Tigers to unveil McMahon
McMahon and Mitch Morton - a highly rated trade from West Coast - were both exceptional in the club's intra-club match on Friday.
Richmond is in an excellent position on the injury front, with only No. 2 draft pick Trent Cotchin out long-term.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Both Morton and McMahon have the potential to help fantasy teams, but they have to find a spot in the side to do that. McMahon would seem to be a favourite of Richmond’s coach so he might grab a spot in the back line. As the Richmond back line has produced a number of good fantasy players recently, including King and Newman, if McMahon does play a lot of minutes he will be high in stats.
Morton goes from a great team to one down the other end of the ladder, so there have to be more opportunities for him to play. As with plenty of other players in the AFL, the preseason games might give Morton the chance to win a regular spot on his team and fantasy teams.
An early look at the fantasy value that players might have for season 2008, listing them from best to worst.

2008 AFL Player Fantasy Rating - Sydney
Melbourne need to have all their stars firing if they are to bounce back from a disappointing 2007. Cameron Bruce is in doubt for round 1, and without him the Demons would be in a bit of trouble.
From the Melbourne site: Bruce "ready for round one"
Bruce, sidelined from training after damaging the medial ligament in his right knee, had a “50-50 chance” of playing in the pre-season NAB Cup competition, Connolly said.
Bruce’s injury was “just some soreness”, and the pre-season competition would take a back seat to ensuring Bruce was properly recovered before taking the field.
From the Herald Sun: Bruce injury a blow for Dees
While the Demons put a positive spin on Bruce's injury and said he would be fit for Round 1, it is terrible timing.
Ruck recruit John Meeson has starred on the track, while Adem Yze, Clint Bartram and Brent Moloney are on target after struggling with injury last season.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Cameron Bruce was often a favourite of fantasy coaches, especially when he had position eligibility as a forward, but with an injury cloud over his round 1 availability he may be avoided by fantasy coaches until he has proved he is fit. Even if he does miss an early game or two he would still be a good player to sign later in the season.
The article above also seems to mention John Meesen, maybe he is close to securing the job as White’s backup.
Jonathan Brown is in prefect health and ready to dominate the AFL again, that is good news for the Brisbane coach. The article below also says that young Lions Henderson and Collier are a chance to play in the senior side, that could be good news for fantasy footy coaches.
From The Courier-Mail: Lion Jonathan Brown ready after trouble-free pre-season
The club's top draft pick, Lachlan Henderson, is a tall marking forward from Brown's old junior side Geelong Falcons. He will play in attack tonight and may get a run up forward against the Bombers.
Although Henderson has played the majority of his football in attack, defence is the one area with positions up for grabs at the Lions and he may find himself in a battle with Collier for a position down back this year.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Henderson might have more fantasy stats potential as a defender, with Brown and Bradshaw up forward the best Henderson could do would be similar to Mills’ and Clark’s numbers last year. There is still a chance that Henderson does find a spot in the back half, and he might have some big fantasy games due to his marking and sharing the ball with Drummond and Adcock.
Collier can play most of the positions on the football field, which is a good thing for fantasy stats. He can be a big body in the midfield, can play on tall or short forwards in the Brisbane back line and has also shown some ability to kick goals too. Collier may have gone a round later in the draft than Henderson did, but his fantasy value this season could be as good or better than Henderson’s.
B Ed Barlow
B Cale Morton
C Rhys Palmer
C Tom Hislop
R Ivan Maric
R Matthew Kreuzer
F James Sellar
F Leroy Jetta
Barlow showed in a few games last season that he has a multitude of skills, and in 2008 he is a chance to be a regular player for the Swans. Cale Morton enters the league with foot skills that are better than most AFL players, and he joins a club that should play him all the time. C Morton is one of the few first year players who might be on a large number of fantasy teams.
The Dockers need speed in the middle so they need to play Rhys Palmer. Hislop showed promise when he played for Essendon last year, although injuries did limit his number of appearances, he should be a bargain buy in fantasy leagues. Hislop may also have position eligibility as a fantasy defender, as he did play in the back line for Essendon in 2007.
Biglands was the initial choice for this spot, but he is injured again. That means Maric, Griffin and Moran will come into consideration in fantasy leagues. As the Crows have plenty of tall forwards this season, maybe Griffin won't be needed forward, which is often where his stats come from, so Maric might be the better fantasy choice. The game on Saturday might show who the Crows’ new number 1 ruckman will be. It will also depend on their fantasy prices, but none of the Crows’ remaining ruckmen will be very expensive. Kreuzer is already impressing those at Carlton, and he should impress fantasy coaches too.
Sellar and Jetta have been in the league for a year now and both bring something that their AFL teams need, the Crows need a marking forward like Sellar and the Bombers require the pace that Jetta has.
A Possible 2008 SuperCoach Team - Forwards
The Swans made it to a couple of AFL Grand Finals in recent years with plenty of good luck when it came to injuries, or the lack of them. But Nic Fosdike may be a late starter for the Swans this season after hurting his knee.
From Fox Sports: Knee injury sidelines Fosdike
AN awkward landing during an innocuous marking drill at training has left Sydney midfield star Nic Fosdike in doubt for the Swans' AFL season opener against St Kilda.
Fosdike has avoided surgery after damaging the medial ligament in his knee but the hard-running 27-year-old is still likely to be sidelined for the next four to six weeks.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Fosdike’s injury could allow the early Bird to quickly establish himself as a part of the Swans’ midfield. Craig Bird may have just been recently drafted to the Swans, but as a NSW scholarship player he has been training there for quite a while and is ready to play. Jude Bolton could also benefit with more playing time.

2008 AFL Player Fantasy Rating - St Kilda
The Kangaroos were successful last season with Nathan Thompson out of the lineup, he is now back and will either add an extra weapon up forward for the Kangaroos or possibly cause his coach a few problems if he thinks there is enough space up forward for Thompson, Jones, Edwards and Hale.
From the Kangaroos’ site: Nathan Thompson's return imminent
Speaking at the Kangaroos’ Telstra AFL Community Camp in Bairnsdale, Bewick said Thompson would make his return against the Western Bulldogs next Friday after a 12-month layoff with a knee injury.
“He just wants to play a game of footy and I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t playing up in Darwin.”
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Like all older players returning from a year out of the game, it is a risk in signing him for fantasy teams. He wasn’t the most mobile player before his injury, so his projected stats for season 2008 might be a bit lower than what he brought in a couple of years ago.
Not only will fantasy coaches have to decide if Thompson is worth having on their team, but the rest of the forwards at the Kangaroos will be affected by Thompson’s return. Hale probably won’t fit alongside Thompson in the forward 50. Edwards didn’t really do as well as expected last season, after joining the Kangaroos after his 100 goals in the VFL, and Thompson may not be sharing the goal-square with him too often. Corey Jones should still be an effective player, as he can go for a run up the ground as well as marking the ball up forward.
F Matthew Pavlich
F Nick Riewoldt
F G Ablett
F Brad Johnson
F Scott Welsh
F Andrew Embley
F Sean Rusling
Pavlich and N Riewoldt are a couple of solid fantasy forwards to build a fantasy league contender around. G Ablett, B Johnson and Embley can all kick goals while still accumulating possessions around the ground.
Rusling was supposed to be a fantasy sleeper a year ago, and after missing most of 2007 with an injury he could still be a bargain in 2008. Scott Welsh joins a team that needs him to kick goals, he might be someone who helps fantasy coaches a lot more than McDougall, who was in the same position as Welsh as the Bulldogs' new forward hope, did last year.
A Possible 2008 SuperCoach Team - Rucks
Carlton lost again, but they did find someone who can kick a few goals. Adam Hartlett might become a regular contributor for Carlton as a forward.
From the AFL site: Fremantle gives Carlton the old heave-ho
It did seem to charge Fremantle however, which had trailed 2.4 to 1.2 at the first change after Blue Adam Hartlett had nailed two goals in the opening term.
Carlton: 2.4 5.6 5.9 9.10 (64)
Fremantle: 1.2 6.4 10.6 11.12 (78)
Goals: Carlton – Hartlett 3 Bannister Betts Cloke Kreuzer Russell Stevens. Fremantle – Crowley 2 Headland 2 Mayne 2 Mundy 2 Gilmore Murphy Tarrant.
Best: Carlton – Murphy Hartlett Hampson Russell. Fremantle – Headland Crowley Gilmore Schammer Murphy Johnson
AFL Fantasy Impact:
With Waite mentioning he will be in the back line at Carlton, there is a spot or two up for grabs in their forward line. Fevola will be at full forward while Fisher will be floating around the forward 50 too, and they are both good fantasy players. They will need help from a couple of taller forwards.
Playing around half forward for Carlton, Hartlett might be useful for fantasy teams. Last season, when he was used a bit more as a defender, it was said that he was recruited by Carlton due to his skills as a tall forward. His work in the back line wasn’t the greatest, and a spot up forward does seem like a better fit for him.
Kreuzer, Hampson, Cloke and Ackland will all be given time up forward too. Kreuzer would have to be the best fantasy player to choose from that group.

2008 AFL Player Fantasy Rating - Richmond
The Crows just got a bit closer to a wooden spoon, and their coach may not last much longer too. Rhett Biglands could miss the season, which is not the best news for a Crows team that lost Hudson and Meesen to trades.
From the Adelaide site: Crows confirm Biglands' knee injury
Biglands has sought several different medical opinions and won’t make an official announcement until later this week, but results are expected to confirm that the 30-year-old has again torn his anterior cruciate ligament.
“It leaves us very inexperienced in the ruck,” Craig said.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
At the start of season 2007, the Crows only had two ruck options, Hudson and Griffin. That was an easy situation for fantasy coaches to figure out. This time, the Crows seem to only have three ruckmen to choose from with Maric, Griffin and Moran. Griffin and Moran might have the most potential but the Crows probably see Maric as a stronger player for the ruck and he might get the majority of the playing time.
R Dean Cox
R Troy Simmonds
Dean Cox is the superstar fantasy ruckman of the AFL. He should be worth the price. Cox is also healthier at the moment than he was 12 months ago.
Simmonds might be a bargain this time, if fantasy leagues use 2007 as the basis for his initial player price. In 2006, Simmonds was among the top 10 at Richmond for possessions and marks, and as the Tigers haven't added a new ruckman for 2008 it should mean Simmonds is again a very good fantasy ruckman.
A Possible 2008 SuperCoach Team - Centres
Carlton tried to win by outscoring people last year, often playing all their quality talls in the forward line, but it was not a successful tactic. Jarrad Waite has said he will be playing in the back line in 2008, which should solidify the defensive structure at Carlton and also allow provide Waite with a role that will help him bring in more fantasy stats.
From the Carlton site: The case for the defence: Waite
“The way Ratts is speaking, I think I’ll be starting down back at the start of the year and see how I go down there,” Waite said.
“I hope to play centre half-back. I wouldn’t mind making that position mine this year. I sort of got moved around a fair bit last year, so I wouldn’t mind making it mine.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
His numbers are consistently higher when he is settled in as their centre half back, Bock at Adelaide and Polak at Richmond are similar fantasy players to Waite as they can help when played as a forward but their effectiveness for fantasy teams is probably at it's best when they are defenders for their AFL clubs.

2008 AFL Player Fantasy Rating - Port Adelaide
The Cats will still start the season as favourites to win again but they are not having the ideal preparation with a couple of their important defenders
From The Geelong Advertiser: Scarlett's knee rules him out
Scarlett had an arthroscopy on his left knee to remove loose materials, but Cats football manager Neil Balme said there was no cartilage damage and expected it to sideline the full back for ``a couple of weeks at worst''.
About Egan:
``It's obviously not ideal, he'll miss the first few weeks of the season but we're not putting a time frame on it. It's just good it was found now and not later.''
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Egan will miss a few games, but Geelong already showed how they play without him. Hunt, Harley and Mackie do a bit extra in the back line with Egan out. While it doesn't look like Scarlett is expected to miss any games, if he was also out it might require Geelong to restructure their back line and give an unexpected player enough minutes to help fantasy teams. Lonergan might be someone who becomes a fantasy player, the above article also mentions Harry Taylor could be called on to provide some height in the back line.
C Daniel Cross
C Sam Mitchell
C Brent Stanton
C Daniel Wells
C Brad Sewell
C Jason Winderlich
A few of the star Hawthorn players are suspended for the early games, which should mean Mitchell and Sewell get even more of the ball then. They will also be solid players for statistics when Hawthorn have all players available too.
Cross and Stanton are in the process of taking over as the new leader in their teams' midfields. That should be a good thing for fantasy points. Both players should be among the AFL leaders for total possessions.
Wells is always someone who has the potential to be a star, and maybe this time he gets there. Winderlich might have a bigger role with Hird and Camporeale gone.

2008 AFL Player Fantasy Rating - Melbourne
The fantasy season for AFL is about to start, and a possible SuperCoach team will be posted over the next few days. Taking into account the stats and player prices and positions from last season, and estimating a few others, this team should fit under their salary cap.
B Chad Cornes
B Heath Shaw
B Jess Sinclair
B Andrew Walker
B Beau Waters
B Martin Mattner
B Michael Pettigrew
Chad Cornes was a star last year and he will probably be a star again for fantasy statistics. Maybe he is position eligible in the centre as well as the back line this time, but it is better to play him and other dual position players as a defender or forward as that leaves room for another centre player in the fantasy team. H Shaw and Sinclair get midfield amounts of possessions while playing as fantasy defenders.
Walker and Waters might be a bit cheaper than they should be, although until the actual player prices are revealed that isn't known for sure. Mattner is a fantasy sleeper to think about choosing because he has changed AFL teams, and with Sydney he should be at his best after falling out of favour with the coaches at Adelaide. Pettigrew can put together some big games for fantasy points, and if he can produce them with more consistency his fantasy value will go up.
The Eagles have a lot of depth to call on, and they will need it as several big names departed this offseason. Ebert and other players acquired via the recent draft will be vying for spots with players like Nicoski and others who were not regulars in 2007.
From theWest.com.au: Eagles get ready for first full encounter
Carlton recruit Josh Kennedy, who West Coast received as part of the Judd trade, and draft picks Chris Masten, Brad Ebert, Tony Notte, Scott Selwood and Patrick McGinnity will get their first chance to impress the coaching staff after joining the club at the end of 2007.
Mark Nicoski, Chad Fletcher and Steven Armstrong will want to remind selectors of their importance to the team after struggling through 2007.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
There should be a few fantasy bargains provided by the Eagles. Nicoski and Sam Butler might be two to look at, although Ebert could be a surprise. Chris Masten, drafted with a pick from the Judd deal, seems to be copying Chris Masters as he has been suspended, but later in the year Masten should be helping fantasy teams.
Another part of the Judd trade was Mr Kennedy, the Eagles seemed to insist that he was included in the deal so maybe they have a role in mind for him. As the third big forward, supporting Hansen and Lynch, Josh Kennedy might be used as a marking option along the spacious wings of Subiaco and around half forward, that could provide a solid amount of fantasy stats.
A tall, athletic midfielder who runs around with the ball in one hand, that might work.
From Fox Sports: Brennan shapes up in midfield
"I look forward to something different each week, pinch-hitting in the midfield or floating forward or back. It just suits me not to be pigeon-holed."
Lions fitness coach Lachlan Penfold has made special mention of Brennan as one of the players to have made the most improvement over summer, setting strength and endurance records.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
With Drummond out of the lineup in the early rounds of 2007, Brennan produced for fantasy teams as the Lions' centre half back. Later in the season he had a few big games for fantasy stats as a forward.
More time in the middle would mean a consistent amount of possessions for Brennan, he would also bring in a lot more marks than most midfielders. A midfield role could increase Brennan’s per game numbers by 4 to 6 possessions.
With Bradshaw returning to action this season, that could mean Brennan isn't needed in the forward line. If Drummond, Merrett and Patfull have the back half under control then the midfield could be the right spot for Brennan in 2008.

2008 AFL Player Fantasy Rating - Kangaroos
Biglands was going to be part of the possible 2008 SuperCoach team that will be posted here in the coming days. It doesn't seem like he had a major setback here and will still be the Crows' top ruckman this season.
From the Adelaide site: Biglands’ Dubai comeback delayed
Biglands did not participate in Adelaide’s full-scale competitive session on Wednesday, but trained indoors with fellow comeback kid Trent Hentschel.
Once Biglands returns to the field, Maric and Griffin are expected to fight for the second ruck spot left vacant by Ben Hudson, who has joined the Western Bulldogs.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
While Biglands should be ready for round 1, knee injuries can be difficult to recover from so there is a chance Biglands isn't at his best at the start of the season. If the Crows have to go with Maric and Griffin in the ruck it might provide fantasy teams with some new options. Griffin showed last year he can also kick goals when he is playing in the ruck so he would be the better player for fantasy teams. Along with Maric the Crows also have Brad Moran, with his running ability he has the potential to be a very good fantasy ruckman.
The Crows are going to be a team undergoing a lot of changes as they enter the post-Ricciuto era. Jason Porplyzia wants to change too, from a half forward marking target into a midfield player.
From The Advertiser: Altitude training Crows' new fitness edge
In a determined bid to break into Adelaide's high-quality midfield unit, Porplyzia - with Rhett Biglands and Ben Rutten - has been undertaking simulated altitude training.
If successful, keeping up with Carlton superstar Chris Judd won't seem such a daunting task.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Porplyzia could be a forward who becomes a midfield tagger, like Cameron Ling. One part of Cameron Ling's game that stands out as a tagger is his ability to kick a goal. The player he is tagging decides to have a short break from the action and leaves the middle to go the back line, Ling follows and is comfortable playing as a forward and can grab a quick goal, helping his AFL team and a lot of fantasy teams. If Porplyzia can play this role for the Crows, he would also be someone who could become a goal-kicker while still following an opponent. In the middle of the ground, Porplyzia would also be a better player than many midfielders in the air, so a few marks would help the fantasy points too.
If Porplyzia can get minutes in the midfield it will make him a much better player for fantasy stats. It could mean he splits his time between the forward line and the midfield, so while still producing some goals and marks he would also increase his total possessions with time on the ball.

2008 AFL Player Fantasy Rating - Hawthorn
Maybe they just wanted to use the word Potchefstroom, but there is news out of Potchefstroom that Collingwood's John McCarthy, the 31st overall selection in the recent AFL draft, is impressing the coaches and might be an inclusion in their NAB Cup team. A good game there and he might be on his way to a spot in their round 1 team. Although maybe his form in Potchefstroom won't be continued when he leaves Potchefstroom.
From the Collingwood site: Potchefstroom push puts McCarthy in the mix
Coach Mick Malthouse declared John McCarthy, a promising midfielder from the Dandenong Stingrays, was right in the mix for selection for Collingwood’s NAB Cup clash with the Crows in Dubai on February 9.
Malthouse said the Magpies were “delighted” with all their draftees and hinted a few might get their chance for some serious ground time against the Crows.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Two things that fantasy coaches should remember, Collingwood have played a lot of first year players during the past couple of seasons and their drafting has been as good as any team around. So McCarthy, might see some action in 2008.
Collingwood might want to move some regulars from half back into the action in the middle, so a spot could open up in the back line so that might be why Collingwood are experimenting with McCarthy in the back half. He is only a fantasy sleeper at the moment, but he could be someone to remember when selecting a fantasy bench player, especially if he is position eligible as a fantasy defender.
With the AFL fantasy season about to start, check back for regular AFL Fantasy Player Notes.
Collingwood are looking for a big defender to help Wakelin, Goldsack and O'Brien. Chris Dawes and Nathan Brown will have a chance in preseason to win a spot in the team.
From Fox Sports: Fresh Pies ready to start down back
UNTRIED youngsters Chris Dawes and Nathan Brown will be given opportunities in the Collingwood backline as the club begins life without the man once considered crucial to its success, James Clement.
Both are in line to be used in key defensive posts in Collingwood's NAB Cup match against Adelaide in Dubai on Saturday week.
AFL Fantasy Impact:
Brown played a lot more in 2007 so he must have the advantage over Dawes here, he would also have played more as a defender during his career. Dawes did have some exciting VFL games, when he returned to action after overcoming his knee injury, so he may also be ready for AFL.
There would only be room for one of them in the Collingwood team, and that would seem to be Brown, but the preseason games might change things. Dawes is someone who would be suited to playing in Rocca's spot, so if Collingwood need to replace an injured Rocca during 2008 it could be Dawes that they choose and not Reid.
The vacancies that have been created, due to trades, retirements and delistings, and the players who may take over the position and have a big fantasy season.
Chris Grant - He has been a huge part of the team and they will struggle to replace what he did. Skipper was the best they had when it came to a tall forward to kick to, he might help fantasy teams again or maybe McDougall finally reaches his potential.
Matthew Robbins - They have added a bit more size as Scott Welsh replaces Robbins as a leading forward. Welsh is going to be a useful player for fantasy teams.
Jordan McMahon - McMahon going away frees up a few more possessions for another player. Everitt might have 5 more possessions per game than he did in his first season of AFL. Griffen is another Bulldog who should do more this time than in 2007.
Cameron Faulkner - Faulkner ended up being just another Bulldogs' draft bust. Someone who is going along a bit better is Higgins and he could be ready for a breakout season, Higgins could add 5 to 7 more possessions per game than he had last season and he will also kick a few goals.
Luke Darcy - Ben Hudson is now on the team and will be their number 1 ruckman. Hudson gets a good amount of hitouts, and also works for the ball at ground level, so he will again be a solid fantasy ruckman.

2008 AFL Player Fantasy Rating - Fremantle
The vacancies that have been created, due to trades, retirements and delistings, and the players who may take over the position and have a big fantasy season.
Chris Judd - Players like Rosa, Embley and A Selwood might get a few extra possessions with Judd gone.
Rowan Jones - Hurn is someone who might average a few more possessions in 2008. Last season Hurn had around 5 fewer possessions per game than R Jones did.
Daniel Chick - If he has a healthy season, Nicoski could be a big help to fantasy teams. With Chick out, Nicoski could play in his spot. The Eagles may also decide to go bigger in the back line now, as there were times that Chick played on a tall forward, and that could mean Graham or MacKenzie become regular players.
Mitch Morton - Ebert might get a chance to play a bit in 2008, possibly in a role that the Eagles did try Morton in.
Ben Cousins - Priddis stepped into his spot last season and will be a star fantasy player again in 2008.
Ashley Sampi - They don't really have an effective small forward, but Armstrong or Wirrpanda could be their best option and one or both might help fantasy teams with some goals and possessions.

2008 AFL Player Fantasy Rating - Essendon
Adam Schneider - Buchanan and Bevan didn't play all the games last season, with Schneider gone it is likely that one or both will have a bigger role now. Buchanan would be expected to be the better player for fantasy stats.
Sean Dempster - Dempster didn't find a lot of the ball with Sydney, and while he may improve after moving to St Kilda it doesn't matter for the Swans as they added Martin Mattner. Mattner should get back to his best form now he is out of Adelaide.
Stephen Doyle - He didn't play as Jolly and Everitt performed well in the ruck. Currie and White are the reserves behind Sydney's ruck starters now.
Simon Phillips - The Swans needed some variety up forward but must have thought Phillips was not big enough for the role, he is small even for a small forward. Veszpremi can play in several spots on the ground but also showed he can kick a number of goals when played forward, maybe Sydney start Veszpremi up forward at the start of his AFL career.
