AFL Dream Team Fantasy Game Has Started

Go to the AFL site, register and sign up a team of 30 players. A bit simpler than other games as it is just totals for disposals and doesn’t take into account effectiveness.

How does the price of the player increase or decrease e.g do the cheaper players increase faster or more easily than the more expensive players?
2. March 19th 2007 @ 23:59. Sports Insider Says:
That is an important question, and having several players on your fantasy roster who go up in price can give you more money to trade for established stars.

In previous years it is the cheapest players who have the biggest and fastest value change. Last season Roe and Polo were just a couple of players who made an impact when they played and this was also reflected in their fantasy price.

According to the Dream Team rules, a player needs "at least 3 games in order for their value to increase or decrease". The price changes "on their most current performance from Round to Round" and a "rolling average is used to determine how a player's value changes".

The big-priced players don't have a lot of price movement, it seems to be the players who are not expected to have a big year and then they suddenly play like a star who are the ones who rapidly increase in price. This season Kangaroos players Edwards and Thomas would be good candidates for a big leap in value. They should double in value after a few games, and by the end of the season, if they are playing like they did in the NAB Cup, their final value could be four times their starting price.

Hi, I have been doing some researching and have picked a provisional side for the AFL.com.au dream team. I have played the last few years and always done well however, my starting line-ups have always left a bit to be desired and I have generally only become competitive later in the season.

So far I have:

(b)
Chad Cornes
Joel Bowden
Graham Johncock
Graham Polak
Sean Dempster
Lachlan Hansen
Albert Proud

(c)
Luke Power
Shaun Burgoyne
Justin Sherman
Marc Murphy
Scott Pendlebury
Joel Selwood

(r)
Dean Cox
Josh Fraser

(f)
Mathew Pavlich
Brendan Fevola
Quinten Lynch
Brad Ottens
Paul Medhurst
Nathan Brown (Rich)
Lance Franklin

Reserves:

Mitchel Thorp
Xavier Ellis

Mathew Priddis
Tom Hislop

Ben Hudson
Cameron Cloke

Tom Hawkins
Aaron Edwards

My questions are:

- Do you think I have gambled on too many rookies getting games early?
- Have I spent too big on stars to the detriment of more middle of the range (200-300k) players?
- Have I got any complete duds in there?
- Are my backs my weak link?
- For round 1, who would you select as captain from my team.

Cheers, Steve.

Thank you for posting your team and your questions. You don’t really need any advice as that team is loaded with great players. When the round 1 teams are announced it will mean a possible move or two as some of your first-year players may not play in round 1. Hopefully the following ideas address your questions.

- Do you think I have gambled on too many rookies getting games early?
It doesn’t look like Proud will have as big a role as he could with the Lions. The health of Lappin is a big part of that, and Matthews thinks Lappin could be ready to play, the possible elevation of Begley also provides another smaller defender for Proud to compete with for playing time.
Selwood in the centre could be a good move, although as you have Priddis on your bench you may want to swap them around. Hawkins’ injury meant he missed his chance in preseason to push for a senior spot, now it looks like Ottens is in great form and Hawkins may have to wait for his chance.

- Have I spent too big on stars to the detriment of more middle of the range (200-300k) players?
Your money looks well spent as your big stars are some of the top fantasy players.

- Have I got any complete duds in there?
A fantasy team at the start of last season could have had Patrick Bowden, Brad Symes and Heath Scotland and people would not have been impressed, it is far too early to label anyone a “dud”. Everyone you have selected could contribute this season, but there are some like Thorp, Hawkins and Hislop who might need an injury or two at their club to get their chance.

- Are my backs my weak link?
There is no problem with your three big stars. It’s logical to think that Sydney and Richmond need a big effort from Dempster and Polak, and injuries and delistings have opened up playing time for those two. That leaves Hansen and Proud, injuries to Thompson and Gibson should make Hansen value for fantasy money, at least for the early rounds if not the entire season. Maybe Proud could be replaced, but wait until the round 1 teams are announced.

- For round 1, who would you select as captain from my team.
That is a tough choice. Luke Power against Hawthorn is a solid pick, while Chad Cornes could be a loose player in the Power back line against the Dockers and would get a lot of the ball. J Bowden’s Dream Team ranking isn’t as high as it is for other AFL fantasy games but the ball could be down his end a lot.

There is plenty of time for you to adjust your team but it seems to be in great shape. Thorp and Ellis might not be contributing a lot early in the season, maybe someone like Tim Boyle is an option instead. Sam Hunt has a lot of fantasy potential.

Medhurst is a bit of a risk at his fantasy price, he’s more expensive than Ebert, Neitz and Robertson. Medhurst could be a good player, and injuries at Collingwood mean he should be playing, but his role at the Magpies is uncertain. With Aaron Edwards there on your bench, he might be as good or an even better fantasy player than Medhurst, if you save money there it could provide enough funds for another star defender or midfielder.

I need help picking a bottom priced defender for a bench position. Out of Sam Hunt, Riggio, and others of that price range who do you think has the most value? I'm currently leaning towards Riggio because I feel he has cemented a spot. Your thoughts?

It does seem that Riggio is more assured of a spot for round 1 than Sam Hunt is, as the Kangaroos are now without a couple of players from their NAB Cup sides. Geelong have plenty of defenders to choose from, S Hunt averaged around 12 possessions a game in the preseason matches so he might be named in their round 1 team. There are a good number of inexpensive defenders to look at.

Matt Riggio: A good choice for a fantasy bench spot, he has been picked for all their preseason games.
Sam Hunt: Was a good performer at VFL level last season, should play plenty of AFL this season.
Tim Boyle: Is kicking goals for Hawthorn.
Xavier Ellis: Had nearly 20 disposals in one practice match, will make his debut in 2007.
Matthew Warnock: Was good in the round 1 NAB Cup game, might play an early game with Dunn out and Rivers also has a slight injury.
Will Thursfield: He is coming back from a knee injury.
Matt Tyler: Played for the Lions in the NAB Cup, has potential but probably won't play very often now.
Adam Hartlett: Had a good game on the Gold Coast, with 14 possessions and 5 marks.
Luke McGuane: Richmond have played him as a defender this season, he would give them another big body so maybe they play him.
Will Hamill: Among a bunch of good rookies there, including Begley, who could take Voss' spot on the list.

These players are close to the minimum cost for fantasy defenders:
Lachlan Hansen: A chance to play all 22 games this season.
Nick Lower: The Power have a lot of players to pick from but Lower has been consistent for them in preseason games.
Cameron Wight: Has to take on a bigger role for the first couple of games with Harris out.

A couple of ruckmen who could start the season with a big game or two, and also have a low fantasy price at the moment, are Blake of Geelong and Pattison of Richmond. Blake gets a chance at more playing time with King out while Pattison impressed Coach Wallace in a recent practice match. Griffin and Renouf might see some action this season, but importantly they are also one injury away from a very big increase in playing time.

Among the cheapest midfielders, everyone knows about Gibbs and J Selwood, and Lindsay Thomas had a big preseason. Varcoe and Muston might see some action in the early rounds, Hadley is cheap but won’t be there in round 1, Rodan has value when his current price is compared to his preseason stats and players like Knights, Winderlich and Priddis don’t cost a lot but all could have big years.

Some fantasy games award points if a player receives a free, and also take off points for giving away the free kicks, so as well as the bigger forwards getting extra goals due to the umpire’s whistle it could also add some more fantasy points with the free kicks received.

Who’s a good ruckman that will win?

Fraser, White, Cox, Lade especially when Brogan is out, Simmonds when he is healthy and also Hille.

The Cats’ two big forwards can be played as fantasy ruckmen, so if Ottens and Mooney kick goals it will make them good options in the ruck for fantasy teams, just due to the fantasy points. Sydney’s duo of Everitt and Jolly is an unknown factor, although they were good in preseason, Everitt might also be up in the elite ruckmen group.

Reid and Pattison on the bench could be a smart move. The Magpies have talked about playing Reid as they need another big forward. Everyone will have to wait to see if Bizzell is playing, his price is right to put him in a fantasy team. Your back line has what is often the winning strategy for fantasy AFL, mostly comprised of the smaller midfielder types.

Your forwards and ruckmen will bring in the stats. M McVeigh is an interesting choice, Essendon play him in a few different spots so he could be stuck in a back pocket or he could be in the action. Players like Tambling or Wojcinski might be better at a similar price, and even Ricky Dyson could be an option. You have the four stars in the middle, and Higgins and McVeigh are hard to predict for stats as they play on teams deep with talent at their spots.

I've posted my team below for the Herald Sun SuperCoach .. PLEASE, any advice/observations/criticisms would be greatly appreciated.

B: McLeod, C Cornes, McPhee, A Walker, Raines, Polak, O'Hailpin (Bench: Williams, Hunt)
C: Goodes, Goodwin, Hodge, Kerr, Deledio, N Lappin (Bench: L Thomas, R Young)
R: Sandilands, Darcy (Bench: C Cloke, Spaanderman)
F: Hall, Pavlich, Fevola, R Murphy, Monfries, N Brown, Koschitzke (Bench: Alwyn Davey, Hughes)

A couple of players are there just as fillers (Young, Spaanderman and Hughes). A questionmark on Nigel Lappin because of his health. Should I start with Cloke or Darcy? Your tip as captain? Please let me know what you think.

I've also posted my AFL.com.au Dream team. Again, anything you have to say would be great.

B: C Cornes, J Bowden, McPhee, Jacobs, A Walker, Raines, Adcock (Bench: O'Hailpin, W Hamill)
C: Goodes, Hodge, Kerr, Deledio, J McVeigh, Lappin (Bench: Gibbs, Browne)
R: Sandilands, Darcy (Bench: Knobel, Spaanderman)
F: Hall, Pavlich, Fevola, G Ablett, Monfries, N Brown, Koschitzke (Bench: Alwyn Davey, Harbrow)

Again W Hamill, Spaanderman and Harbrow are filler.
I'm really not sure about Jacobs. What do you think about J McVeigh? A tip as Captain? Any other suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Sandilands had much better fantasy points in the Dream Team game. Maybe the SuperCoach game gives him a lot of clangers or maybe they don’t count enough of his hitouts as to advantage. Darcy should be better than Cloke, it is expected that Darcy will start forward and then have a run in the ruck while Cloke’s role is off the bench.

N Lappin has a low price so he is worth the gamble. It might take him a few games for him to have solid stats, so one option could be to wait until he is doing that and then trade for him.

One of your Sydney players, Hall or Goodes, might be a good option for captain.

Some of your cheaper players could be changed with others who have more of a chance of playing. Angus Graham is more of a chance to play than Spaanderman. AFL-listed players like Renouf, Sellar and Griffin are only a tiny bit more in cost but have a lot more potential too. Instead of Ross Young, for the same price you could have Adams or Kiel and both those players could be elevated to their teams’ senior lists.

I'm really not sure about Jacobs. What do you think about J McVeigh? A tip as Captain?

Jacobs’ numbers, his overall ranking, were better in SuperCoach last season than his Dream Team points average. Jacobs price might be a bit high, and the defenders just below him in price are just as good if not better.

J McVeigh could be a good upside pick. He plays every game and there is room for his stats to go up.

Goodes might be the best captain for this side.

Instead of Harbrow, the Kangaroos' Matthew Campbell might be a better pick, still at the same price but Campbell is more of a chance for senior football.

When the teams are announced on Thursday it might mean a few players need to be traded. There could have been announcements for rookie elevations too. The two teams are loaded with stars and plenty of onballer types so they should be competitive.

okay another question, it's about ruckman this time.
Mooney, Everitt, Sandilands or Hale?
It's for SuperCoach.
Cheers!
19. March 28th 2007 @ 02:48. Sports Insider Says:
Mooney and Hale will get their fantasy points as forwards for their AFL teams, Everitt will split his time between the ruck and a forward position and Sandilands will mainly be a ruckman.

Mooney was great for goals, kicks and marks in the NAB Cup. Sandilands got plenty of possessions, and hitouts. Those two should continue contributing like that during the regular season. Maybe Mooney will start the season even better, with King out. If you want a more guaranteed return, then Sandilands could be your pick. Mooney will be good, but it will be his kicking at goal that brings in fantasy points and there will be some games when he doesn’t do too much.

Everitt is in a new situation so how he is played is unknown. He probably starts forward and then halfway through the quarter he moves into the ruck, as long as he doesn’t spend too much time on the bench his fantasy points should be comparable to his fantasy price.

Hale could be the big beneficiary from Thompson’s injury as there might not have been enough room for both big forwards in the forward 50. Hale can play much closer to goal now which should help with more shots at goal.

Mooney played at a high level in every preseason game, including the first game when Ottens was also available and kicking goal. King could miss at least one game, so if Blake starts it will open minutes in the ruck for Mooney or Ottens. It could help Mooney if Ottens leaves the forward line to him and plays a few minutes in the ruck, or if Mooney has the backup ruck role he could get more possessions around the ground. Right now maybe Mooney is the best option out of the four ruckmen.

Can you give me thoughts on my team? Are there cheaper centres that could do the same or near to the same job as mine? Or same price but more likely to do better?

And if i have extra cash from your cheaper centres, who should I upgrade on? Bigger 350 players in attack or defence. Or upgrade people like Franklin, Copeland, Dempster??
21. March 29th 2007 @ 22:16. Sports Insider Says:
Nathan Brown, of Richmond, was named but won’t play this round and could miss next week too. If that is the Brown you have, that will be the move that has to be done before the teams are locked in. If you do have extra money you could sign Pettifer for him, Andrew Krakouer is another slightly cheaper option to Pettifer.

All your centre players have good fantasy prices and they could all bring in stats and have increasing values. Maybe Lappin should start, with Gibbs and Thomas on the bench as they begin their AFL careers.

Instead of upgrading anyone now, your team is quite good and if you wait a few weeks you might be able to get a much better player if someone like Dempster or Copeland has increased their fantasy price.

Milne might be an option, Staker and Miller will have a bigger role in round 1 compared to last season. Pattison could be the Tigers' starting ruckman, but for fantasy he can play as a forward.

They are all good players so play them in your team. If Lappin is back close to what he used to be then he will be a steal in fantasy leagues, his opening fantasy price was very low.
