AFL By The Numbers: 9 David Neitz
9
David Neitz.
Forward for the Melbourne Demons.
One of the big power forwards of the AFL over the past 14 years. Unlike other big forwards like Carey, Kernahan, A Lynch, Q Lynch, Brown and Hall he is yet to win a Grand Final. He was close in 2000, when Melbourne went down to the Bombers.
Neitz first played in 1993, kicking 6 goals in his 6th AFL game. In 1994 the Demons had a strong forward setup with Schwarz, Lyon, Charles and Pike but in 1995 a spot opened up for Neitz in the forward line and he has been there ever since. His best ever season for goals was 2002 when he kicked 82, he has kicked 9 goals in a single game on two occasions.
His career-high for marks in a game was set a long time ago, against Fitzroy he had 16 marks. In season 2000 he recorded his most ever disposals in a game with 31, comprised of 25 kicks and 6 handballs.
Neitz has not been a favourite of the umpires, giving away nearly twice as many free kicks than he recieves. At the Brownlow, like many forwards, he is never in contention. In season 2000 he was awarded 6 votes, 2 votes in every game that year when he had 10 or more marks in a game.
The record book at the Melbourne Football Club mentions Neitz many times, and there is still time for him to accomplish more, but the AFL Premiership might elude him.
