AFL By The Numbers: 8 Shaun Burgoyne
8
Shaun Burgoyne.
Midfielder for the Port Adelaide Power.
There was a lot of talent available in the 2000 AFL Draft. The Power were a big winner with their picks, which included Kane Cornes at number 20 and Domenic Cassisi at pick 50. The Power were also successful in the first round, when other teams were selecting Luke Livingston, Laurence Angwin and Trent Sporn the Power were patiently waiting for pick 12 so they could take Peter Burgoyne's brother, Shaun Burgoyne.
S Burgoyne started off his AFL career in more of a small forward role compared to where he plays now. In his first season of AFL, 2002, he kicked his best career result with 5 goals in a game. He finished that year with 24 goals. The next season he increased his output to 39 goals.
In 2004 he had a bigger role in the middle, fewer goals but also increased stats everywhere else. He also played in the winning AFL Grand Final side that year.
Last year he had his best year, and was awarded more Brownlow votes in 2006 than all his previous seasons combined. His previous career highs for a season were 345 disposals and 79 tackles, in 2006 he recorded 458 disposals and 115 tackles. Big games against West Coast, 34 possessions, and Adelaide, 9 tackles, showed that he will step up when the biggest challenge is presented to him.
2007 looks like it will be Shaun Burgoyne's biggest year so far in the AFL. More personal awards are expected, with another spot in the All-Australian team and being among the leaders for the Brownlow, but it will be the September games that show how big a player he really is and he will have a much bigger role in the next AFL Grand Final he plays in.
