AFL By The Numbers: 6 Brad Johnson
6
Brad Johnson.
Forward/midfielder for the Western Bulldogs.
Brad Johnson was introduced to AFL fans by the 1993 AFL Draft, which was televised at that time. Gaspar went at number 1, Footscray were up at pick 11 and took Johnson. They also drafted Sedat Sir, and traded their other picks for Richard Osborne and Robert West.
For the first three years of his career he was a very good player for Footscray, then for the 1997 season his team became the Western Bulldogs and Johnson stepped up into the elite of AFL midfielders. Starting that year, and continuing until today, he has been over 300 kicks every season. He also started another streak then, with over 100 marks and 100 handballs every year too. Three seasons in his career he has reached 500 disposals for the year. Very rarely injured during his career, Johnson has been a player that the Bulldogs could always depend on.
Recently he has played full forward for the Bulldogs, and despite his size he has been very successful. He actually uses his small stature as a weapon against the bigger defenders of the AFL. He will take a bigger defender out of his comfort zone and into the middle of the ground, there Johnson gets possessions and then races back to the forward line, with his defender struggling to catch him. If a quicker, but smaller defender is opposed to Johnson then Johnson outmarks them repeatedly.
Johnson had never reached 50 goals in a season until 2006, when he kicked 74 goals. He not only made the All-Australian team but was given the captaincy as well. He is also the captain of the Bulldogs now, and he might be able to hold up the cup and fulfil his wish to "win a Premiership".
