AFL By The Numbers: 4 Daniel Cross
4
Daniel Cross.
Midfielder for the Western Bulldogs.
Kris Kross might have made you jump, Daniel Cross would make you receive a handball. There are few players in the AFL who are as effective or prolific with the handball.
The Bulldogs used a late pick, number 56 in the 2000 AFL draft, to take Cross. It took a while for Cross to become a regular for the Western Bulldogs, and he struggled to get a game when his uniform number was 38. When Coach Eade took over Cross thought his time at the Bulldogs might have been ending, that wasn't the case.
From 2005, Cross has been an elite AFL midfielder. Often among the league leaders in handballs and total disposals, and tackles as well. Cross recently set a new career-high in handballs in a game with 25, his career low for handballs is 0 as there was actually a game very early in his career when he didn't have a handball. One thing Cross hasn't done well is kick goals, he is hoping to improve that this season.
Gilbee has taken over from Rohan Smith in the back line. Adam Cooney could be the midfielder/forward player who will eventually replace the many things that Brad Johnson does. Scott West also has an heir apparent, Daniel Cross would be that player. Cross finished second to West in the AFL last season for total handballs.
If Simon Atkins was called Axe, then maybe Daniel Cross should be called Smash as their handball skills can be the cause of a demolition by the Bulldogs.
