AFL By The Numbers: 36 Simon Goodwin
36
Simon Goodwin.
Midfielder for the Adelaide Crows.
Nearly half his games, 4 out of 10, in his first season of AFL were finals. Goodwin debuted for the Crows in 1997, he played in all their finals matches including the big win over the Saints in the AFL Grand Final. Like teammate Shane Ellen, Goodwin joined the Crows through the 1996 preseason draft, Goodwin was pick 18.
Goodwin played more than twice as many games in his second year, and again finished it off with another Grand Final win. He established himself as an important player for the Crows, someone who could take the pressure off their big stars like Ricciuto and McLeod. Goodwin is now a leader in the middle for the Crows.
The big part of Goodwin's game is his kicking, he kicks a lot and he kicks it long and direct. During the first half of his career, Goodwin had an approximate kick to handball ratio of two to one. In recent years his handball numbers have gone up, but his kicks still outnumber his handballs. His best game for kicks was 25, his highest total for handballs in a single game was 20. He hasn't kicked a lot of goals in his career but did kick 4 in a game once.
Goodwin is now a veteran of the Crows, if the Crows continue to get contributions from young players like Knights and van Berlo then Goodwin should have several more opportunities to finish off his career with winning in September like he did at the start of his career.
