AFL By The Numbers: 35 Chad Cornes
35
Chad Cornes.
Defender for the Port Adelaide Power.
AFL drafts can sometimes produce an unexpected highlight, with a funny-looking prospect wearing a suit two sizes too big or a family member or friend wailing in the background as someone has just been drafted to the other side of the country. Then there was the reaction of Graham Cornes after Port Adelaide drafted Chad, the word "hate" seemed to be used a lot when the elder Cornes was asked of his opinion about his son's new AFL team.
The Power used pick 9 in the 1997 AFL draft to select Chad Cornes. The Power were lucky to get him, as Cornes turned out to be one of the best players from the draft. There was a lot of talent, and Mark Bolton, in the top 10 of that draft with Tarrant going one spot ahead of Cornes and Power, Johnstone, Croad and Ottens also going up the top of the draft.
Chad Cornes started his AFL career with a game against Adelaide in 1999, it would be the season after that when he established himself in the Power side. Cornes was used all over the ground by the Power, as he could play nearly every position. A marking forward, a big midfielder, a running defender, he can do it all.
In 2004, the year Port Adelaide won it all, Cornes spent a lot more of the time in the back line. It was a great position for him as he had the height and mobility to play all on nearly all forwards while he could use his foot skills to send the ball efficiently into attack.
Season 2004 provided Cornes' best year for possessions, marks and Brownlow votes. He only kicked 4 goals that year, but set many up with his running from half back.
The most kicks Cornes has had in a game is 25, while his best game for marks was 14. The goals are not as plentiful now as they were in his early years, when he had four consecutive years of at least 20 goals, and that was when he set his game-high for goals when he kicked 5.
Cornes is just hitting his peak as a player, and as he teams with his brother and also the Burgoyne brothers the Power should be able to successfully rebuild into a contender. He also must be getting close to the Brownlow again, and with the ability to dominate in the back line or the middle it would not be a surprise if he won that in the near future.
