AFL By The Numbers: 34 Jeff White
34
Jeff White.
Ruckman for the Melbourne Demons.
When the Dockers entered the AFL they used the first pick in the 1994 AFL Draft to take Jeff White. It was a long way for White to go, and as the Dockers also played Burton and Bandy in the ruck it did not seem that White would be there long-term.
In Jeff White's last game for the Dockers he played against the Demons, and when round 1 of the 1998 AFL season commenced White was taking the field for Melbourne as they faced Fremantle. White spent three years with Fremantle before he made the move back to Victoria, the Dockers received a couple of picks in the 1997 draft for White.
White benefited from the move to Melbourne as most of his stats doubled, when compared to his time with Fremantle. His hitouts in his first year with Melbourne were more than three times better than his best season with the Dockers.
Despite being one of the shorter ruckmen in the AFL, White is rarely at a disadvantage due to his phenomenal leaping ability. He uses this to great affect for hitouts and marks. His best numbers for a single game over his career are 15 marks and 47 hitouts.
There is still plenty of bounce left in White's legs, and he will continue to be a very important player for Melbourne. They were close last season, and while 2007 is probably gone the Demons could rebound in 2008. White is surrounded by a group of young, strong and talented onballers and when they are at full strength and White is directing the ball to them they will be a formidable group.
