AFL By The Numbers: 33 Brett Ebert
33
Brett Ebert.
Forward for the Port Adelaide Power.
Brett Ebert was a father/son selection for Port Adelaide in the 2002 AFL draft. The Power used pick 42 to select Ebert. They also selected Salopek with their first rounder so it was a solid draft for Port Adelaide.
Ebert played his first AFL game in 2004, it was a big year for Port Adelaide but Ebert wasn't there in the finals. In 2005 Ebert became a permanent part of their forward structure and in 2006 he had his best season with 24 goals and 111 marks.
While goals are obviously a very important stat, and he does get plenty of those too, Ebert's marking ability is what makes him stand out at his height. In some ways he is similar to Brad Johnson, as Ebert can mark the ball on a quick lead while he also has a leap and strong hands to take a contested mark against taller opponents. Ebert's best result for marks in a single game is 10.
While Brett Ebert may not ever be the best footballer in his family, he is one of the most underrated forwards in the AFL. In the near future, 50 goals in a season is an achievable target. If the game becomes more open in a few years, and with the Power using Ebert at full forward with Tredrea retired, there might be a season when Brett Ebert gets close to 100 goals.
