AFL By The Numbers: 32 Cameron Bruce
32
Cameron Bruce.
Midfielder for the Melbourne Demons.
Cameron Bruce is a very underrated performer. Teams weren't too excited by his potential in the 1999 AFL draft, as they went for players like Scott Homewood, Clayton Lasscock and Steven Brosnan with Bruce still available. The Demons had already selected five players in the draft before they took Bruce with pick 64.
The Melbourne Football Club quickly found a role for Bruce, as a forward. They then found another task for him to try, the defensive midfielder. A couple of injuries to tall defenders and Bruce would become a versatile backman. His best spot is in the midfield, with a licence to kick goals, and as Melbourne now have players to fill the other roles it should allow them to keep Bruce where the action is.
His game-high stats over his career show how he can flourish in whatever role he is assigned. He can be counted on to kick goals, his best ever performance was 7 goals. If he has to stop someone, he doesn't let his opponent have an easy possession and his 9 tackles in a game is his best result for that stat. Other game-highs over his career include games of 21 kicks, 20 handballs and 11 marks.
With the number 32 on his back, the football often in his hands and his Dwight Schultz-inspired hairstyle Cameron Bruce is never overlooked now. He should be on the next All-Australian team, and as they want to put players in the positions where they actually play it will be good for Bruce as he is eligible for nearly every spot. While he may not be the quickest player or tall enough to be a key position player, his combination of football smarts and skills makes him an elite player in the AFL.

Ricciuto wasn't ready to play when the list was made, with his injuries, so Bruce was the pick. Not that the current and past accomplishments of Ricciuto are not appreciated here, as he was listed as the first player in the post AFL Insider's 32 Favourite Players.
Ricciuto is great, and Bruce is too.
