AFL By The Numbers: 28 Jared Crouch
28
Jared Crouch.
Midfielder for the Sydney Swans.
If there is one thing that Crouch is known for it is his huge streak, from 1998 until the middle of last season Crouch was always out there for the Swans.
Going at pick 8 of the 1995 AFL draft, Crouch was around the club when they played in the 1996 AFL Grand Final but he didn't play until round 7 1998. Some of his teammates for that first game included current Swan O'Loughlin, Licuria who is now a Magpie, Saddington who is a Blue now and also Kelly, Dunkley, Lockett, Bayes, Nicks and even "Luffy".
It might have been the move of Licuria to Collingwood that enabled Crouch to have a bigger role. Crouch was then given the tough roles in the middle, to contain the onball stars of the other team. This is something that Crouch has excelled at, and his high tackles totals show it. He had seasons of 94, 86 and 72 tackles. His best tally in a single game is 8 tackles.
While he is given roles in the middle or in the back line that have stopping as a primary task, he can get the ball himself. His best game of his career for kicks occurred in 2000 when he had 17 against Richmond. He also has a career-high of 15 handballs in a game.
When the streak of consecutive games was broken it meant the Swans would have to play the 2006 finals without a key member of their 2005 win. The Swans came up short but if Crouch was there playing on Armstrong it might have changed the 2006 AFL Grand Final. Crouch also missed this season's round 1 clash against the Eagles, if these two teams do meet again in the 2007 finals then expect Crouch to play a big role.
