AFL By The Numbers: 26 Nick Dal Santo
26
Nick Dal Santo.
Midfielder for the St Kilda Saints.
Sometimes footballers are destined to be at a certain team, like Shipp at the Dockers, and it makes sense that Nick Dal Santo plays for St Kilda. Roughly translated it could mean "Nick from the saint".
Dal Santo was the 13th overall draft selection in 2001, St Kilda were busy that day as they had already taken Ball at 2 and X Clarke at 5. Picks 21 and 37 of the 2001 AFL draft were also used by the Saints to select Maguire and Montagna.
Dal Santo would start playing AFL the following year and it only took him until his second game for him to get over 20 possessions in a match.
In 2005, Dal Santo was close to the Brownlow. He gets plenty of votes, and the umpires always give him twice as many frees as they rule against him, so if the Saints have another big year it could be Dal Santo who is awarded the big individual medal.
Dal Santo will usually get around 500 possessions every season, his game-high best was 34. He doesn't kick many goals but he did manage 5 in one game during his career. It is also a career that is closer to the beginning than the end so all the numbers he has set will probably be eclipsed in the coming seasons.
