AFL By The Numbers: 25 Josh Fraser
25
Josh Fraser.
Ruckman for the Collingwood Magpies.
Is he a ruckman or a forward, Collingwood have been trying to figure that out for a while, not that it matters because he excels in either spot. He starts in the ruck and will then make his way forward, often putting the opposition ruckman in a position they are not suited for as a backman. The trouble continues for teams who then switch a tall defender onto Fraser, a run on the ball and a few important hitouts won and Collingwood again get an advantage due to the versatility of Fraser.
It was not a difficult decision for Collingwood as they had the top pick in the 1999 AFL draft. The most logical draft strategy is to always take the best of the biggest, and that was Fraser.
Fraser played his first AFL game in round 1 2000. His best season for goals was 2002 when he kicked 37, his best season for hitouts was last season, with 341. In the 2002 AFL Grand Final Fraser kicked 3 goals, in the big game the next season he had 21 hitouts.
The game starts in the ruck so it is a very important position on the field, the Magpies have one of the best in Josh Fraser and he will keep them competitive for years to come.
