AFL By The Numbers: 20 Dean Cox
20
Dean Cox.
Ruckman for the West Coast Eagles.
Somewhere out there someone is not doing his job right, if anyone has a football in their hands and is over two metres tall then there should be a scouting report on them. Every team in the AFL missed on foreseeing his talent. Dean Cox lasted until pick 28 of a rookie draft, unbelievable.
Dean Cox made his debut for the Eagles in 2001. His first role was as the backup to Michael Gardiner and it didn't take long for Cox to win the number 1 spot, or Gardiner to lose it.
Cox can do everything on the AFL field and his career-highs for stats in a game back that up. 21 kicks for a ruckman in a single game is very impressive. He has kicked 4 goals in a game and had a best ever game for handballs of 13. Hitouts are an important stat for a ruckman, his best ever performance was 47 hitouts in a game.
The Eagles would not have played in the 2005 and 2006 AFL Grand Finals if they didn't have Dean Cox. His 29 hitouts weren't enough in the 2005 Grand Final, he upped his total in the 2006 game to 34 hitouts which was a big reason why they won. Dean Cox will be among the top 3 AFL ruckmen for many years to come and will probably play in many more Grand Finals.
