AFL By The Numbers: 12 Nick Riewoldt
12
Nick Riewoldt.
Forward for the St Kilda Saints.
The Brisbane Lions could have won every AFL Grand Final this decade if Nick Riewoldt's house was just a bit closer to Brisbane. They missed on adding him through a Queensland zone concession pick, although they were able to add Jamie Charman with it. Brown and Riewoldt in the same forward line, the rest of the AFL can be thankful that didn't happen.
With Riewoldt available to all teams in the draft of 2000, the Saints were able to cash-in on a terrible year and draft him number 1 overall. Koschitzke came along too, he was the second pick.
He debuted in 2001, and ever since 2002 Riewoldt has dominated the AFL. His best year was 2004, with an amazing 256 marks and 67 goals. He also collected 17 Brownlow votes.
On two occasions Riewoldt has kicked 9 goals in a game. He is regularly into double figures for marks and his best ever game was 18 marks against the Crows. He doesn't take a large number of uncontested marks to pad his stats like many other players, often when Riewoldt is marking the ball there are a couple of tall defenders contesting against him.
The Brown-Riewoldt combo nearly happened before, and if Riewoldt doesn't extend his contract with the Saints soon then the Lions have another chance at the end of season 2007.
