AFL By The Numbers: 10 Peter Everitt
10
Peter Everitt.
Ruckman/forward for the Sydney Swans.
More of a skilled footballer who is tall than a typical big ruckman, Everitt has been entertaining AFL crowds since 1993. A fan favourite, sometimes a cause of frustration for his coaches, Everitt has played with three teams and had countless hairstyles.
Everitt had a decade with the Saints, playing in the ruck and up forward. When Everitt started his career with the Saints his teammates included Frawley, Winmar, Devonport, McAdam, Morris and Arceri. When Everitt left the Saints some of his teammates then were Riewoldt, Dal Santo, Milne and Voss.
1998 was his best year with St Kilda. 45 goals, over 400 hitouts and over 400 possessions. It was his finest year with the Saints for Brownlow votes too, although he only received 9 that year.
It might not have been the right move by Hawthorn, acquiring Everitt when they did, but they got plenty of value from him. Starting in 2003, Everitt had four productive and eventful seasons with the Hawks. In 2004 he recorded over 600 hitouts for the year, in 2003 he had his best ever game with 43 hitouts versus Adelaide.
After season 2006 the time was right for Hawthorn and Everitt to work a trade to another club, the Hawks were rebuilding and needed youth while Everitt would be a great acquisition for a contender. Sydney was the perfect fit, they won when they had Ball and Jolly in the ruck and needed to find another veteran ruckman. Everitt is yet to play in a Grand Final, but before he retires it is very likely that he might have been there on the MCG in the big one with the Swans.
